Hi its been a while since i last posted a question on here (i must be getting good at this hobby).

Iv just put together a 40l buffalo all in 1 ish system with a grain basket, pump and pid. The problem i think i have with this when filling up for a test run i had to put 7l of water in before it even touches the basket. How do i incorporate this into my strike water and sparge water calculations?
Also some piccies for you 20190801_171745.jpg

Hi Alside, I could be wrong and more than likely am, is this what is refared to as the dead space, so surely that water will still be there when you lift the grain basket to sparge, I have never taken this into account when I brew in my klarstein leccy kettle, or should it be added to the sparge water I don,t know I just follow what ever brew mate tells me

Yh its like dead space. its just theres a lot of it
Your deadspace is what's left below your drain valve/outlet which I would assume may be 2l at most.Is it possible to reduce the standoffs below the basket to reduce the height and if not you'll just have to compensate with extra grain for loss which won't be that much.
I would take your basket out and while dry add grain by 1 kilo and measure up the side of the basket from the base. After the second has been levelled out measure between first and second and for each increment it will give you your distance between each kilo.
Once done fill to bottom of the basket counting your litres up to each one then this will give you your water needed.
You can then either add more grain to get to your OG and/or boil off your wort to compensate for the loss in deadspace.
Hope this helps.

Its 7l from base of the boiler to bottom of basket. I have been considering the full volume mash or add 7l to my calculated strike water and then work the sparge water out from that.

Thanks for the help any help as always is appreciated
