Unions fought for the working conditions why would they agree to their members losing breaks, starting earlier and losing part of their lunch break.
For an undisturbed half day of non-contact time and a better work/life balance.

The whole idea of keeping all in school or training until 18 is a ridiculous idea designed to keep unemployment figures down.
Half the kids need to get their butts down to building sites learning to lay bricks or wire up houses if we're going to build another million and a half before easter.
Starmer hasnt got a clue. Reeves is worse.
Absolutely agree with this, when I was at college all of the kids that didn't enjoy education/were not academic had all gone and got jobs which only left the people that wanted to learn doing courses that they had chosen. My daughter is currently at college and it is full of kids that have no interest in being there that are just disrupting the lessons and spoiling it for the kids that actually want to learn 😔 I can see the logic but in reality it just doesn't work

in fact, I think holiday providers are not targeting school holidays exclusively. The warm seasons are always pricier because it;s when everybody wants their break- because it's hot.
I would have to disagree here, I am married to a teacher so stuck to school holidays until retirement, the holiday prices shoot up on the exact day that schools break up, not only in summer but also the February and October half terms 😭

It gives teachers half a day class prep etc time to stop teachers working in the evenings as often, improving work-life balance and reducing both teacher sickness absence rates and the number of teachers leaving the profession.
As far as I know this is a legal entitlement, I do wonder whether the conversation 'on the radio: which has started this thread has come from.somebody misunderstanding that this is already in place

I don't know if it's the case now as both my kids left school over 10 years ago, we always took them out on the last week of term and we were never refused, i onced asked the head of the high school they went her answer was they don't do much on the last week of term, they didn't lose out on their education they both have good well paid jobs so much so their is no bank of mum and dad here, the only way you will stop people taking their kids out is to stop the holiday companys hiking there prices in school holidays but that is a matter for government

Also in my view this system is in effect stopping a lot of kids having a holiday, travel and meeting other people and other cultures broadens your horizons and should be part of the education system, say have a random 2 week period were you can take your kids on holiday at normal prices then they could write a essay on what they thought and their experience of were they had been and the people they met

The unions would be involved in negotiations and would give a recommendation.
Correct but you don't have to go with recommendation.
We're currently on a year + overtime ban as we're in dispute. Union would normally advise we always have the overtime if available as its earning potential unless things break down that much we have to go down the industrial action route.
