Would it be fine to brew kits 3/4 years past best before date?

Yes. If yeast is a concern, swap a new for the old.
Also, as long as the LME isn't bulging the can, it's fine.

Considering it's a kit and therefore not that much effort involved, I'd brew it out of curiosity.
