Step drill bit is the tool for drilling the hole imo, there is the danger you go too far if you aren't careful but you should get a much cleaner cut

Definitely let us know how it goes - take some photos too, then pop round and do mine! :D Clamping could be hard - would need a very long clamp to reach down to the hole....
I like the idea of setting the tap lower. My Ritchies FV came with the tap, and if I have already moved the beer over and avoided the sediment, it doesn't need to be so high. Tipping and using a bottling stick becomes awkward as the stick ends up pointing backwards. I've never has a leak when rotating the tap, and my FV sits on a little home-made plinth in garage anyway, so the tap could poke over the edge.

I have the tap from Brew2Bottle that comes with that nut. In my opinion it is pointless, good idea in theory but I couldn’t manage to get it in the right position so the blocked part is at the bottom. Also I needed to add an extra washer in the inside as the tap was leaking. Probably I’ll replace it for a normal nut at some point.

I wonder if its better just to put some mesh (maybe from a hop bag?) over the hole before adding the nut. Simple, but if it works, much better solution!

'mornin' folks. I don't get in to the keyboard much....thought I'd hop in here. 8^)

I ferment in a bucket, then rack to a Speidel as a secondary, then bottle straight off the Speidel tap. My last batch saw my racking cane/siphon suffer some damage-leading-to-retirement. Rather than spend $$ (yes dollars) for a new one, I've decided to expend that towards another Speidel.

In the future, I expect to use the tap on the primary fermenter, with hose to the secondary and thus leave more trub behind in the primary, since the siphon isn't pulling it off. Hopefully, this will be one more step to limiting the amount of sediment in my bottles.

Any thoughts from any of you wise, slightly inebriated, incredibly opinionated gentlemen (& ladies?) from the old country?
