Hola brewsters!

I was told on Saturday by a fellow allotment holder that I could strip his black currant bushes and return a few bottles of vino!

I asked my cousin to help on the offer of some wineable fruit and so we went tonight and got stuck in.

From approximately 10 large bushes we gained 25kg of super juicy black currants. We are making two batches of black currant Turbo cider and three batches of red wine.

The last red wine I made from allotment blackcurrants was voted the best red wine ever by the locals. I must admit it was full of body and fruity beyond belief.

If anyone has any wish to make red wine then I cannot recommend more highly than black currants , better than elderberry any day of the year.

Our currant bushes aren't giving much of a crop this year, sadly. Not even a gallon's worth of any one type, so it'll be mixed-fruit wine this year. Loads of rassies about though, so that'll be the base to add redcurrants and black currants to. Hoping the brambles will do better this year, they were rub last year.

I find blackcurrants on their own are just too fruity, but added to a mix of blackberry and/or elderberry they can be excellent.

I hope to get some fruit wines going next year, the house we just bought has a nice sized garden, I have noticed there are blackberrys and apples out there at the moment, once the house is sorted I will make a start on getting some more fruits planted, and hop-fully some hops too. How does real homemade wine compare to kits?

Significantly cheaper :thumb:

Whether or not they are any better rather depends upon what you like to drink and how good your patience is.

They taste different (in an often undefinable way) to grape based stuff, but can be as good or even better. Must make more strawberry...
A blackberry/raspberry/some-sort-of-currant mix will almost always come out well

After the disappointment of the Young's red kit I was blown away by the black currant wine. The kit had virtually no body and tasted insipid. The currant wine was full bodied and, as Moley said, very fruity.

I don't think I will be bothering with another kit.

Just made a gallon of black currant wine using 1kg of black currants and 800grm sugar 1 tsp pectalace 1 tsp citric and 118 yeast+ 1 tsp youngs yeast neut ,I boiled the blackcurrants for 20 mins added some water then desolved the sugar added 1tsp citric and simmered for 20 min then left to cool blitzed with the blender added to dimijon and topped up to 4 litre @24deg c added pectalace, yeast and neutrient and fitted air lock.after about 15 min all the fruit had floated to the top of the demijon and it was bubbling,on day three it had all dropped and the lava lamp effect had started topped up to 4.75 ltr.day 8 all finihed fg 0.986 and really dry, added finings and day 10 ready to bottle, because of the amount of sediment from the fruit i only got 5.25 bottles that required sweeteng a bit for my taste

That sounds like a very nice brew and very quick to run dry. What was the SG? Is it resting now? Have you had a tester?

hi Diesel 1 didn't check start sg as i was going to top up later but from my calculations it should be 11.5 abv its now in the dark untill required. the taste when going into the bottle was very fruity but also very dry it required 2ml sweetener per bottle for me

Sounds great. I am planning to put some of this brew aside for Gravmas. I currently have a 25L brew cooling on the back door so I can pitch tonight and a 1 1/2 gallon pan of currants/sugar/red grape boiling for tomorrow.
