Doing a slightly modified version of the Big Kenny recipe

Just got the spare quilt wrapped round it now :D

Was hoping for a mash temp of 68C and it came in at 66.9, so not bad for beginners luck.

90 mins to kill, think I'll go grab a homebrew

Bit of a disaster.

Finished the mash, temp was 66.8 - ok I thought, lets lift the bag. Now I've written the whole process down and ticked it off as I went along, so I thought I'd planned pretty well. However, what I didn't account for was lifting the bag and knocking the kettle element out of it's socket and 20L of wort gushing everywhere!

I've managed to capture most of it, so is there any harm in keeping it in a stored vessel over night and boiling tomorrow, once my kettle element has dried out, or is the wort going to be stuffed and be as well starting a fresh?

Ok. Element dried, wort back on boil lost about 3L but I can live with that, just going to add water as I'm too lazy to do the maths to recalculate the hops :D

Wort finally boiling and bittering hops in.

Lost 2 hours with that small hiccup. It's going to be a late un. Best get me sen an ale!

All done inc clean up.

OG was 1.042 at 26C - I'll work the calibrated reading tomorrow, can't be aris'd right now. QBrew had the OG at 1.047, but considering the mis-hap and the extra 3L of water pitched, I can take that on my first attempt.

Right, time for feet up and a beer me thinks.

Welcome to my world mate, I BIAB and the first few was about finding out how many errors were possible! The secret for me is to plan it all, brew often so your practised and relax so it's something to enjoy.

@Cononthebarber - have a good one. with the exception of the 2 hour mis hap i thoroughly enjoyed the experience. another one planned in a fortnight.

@rich27500 - it was your walkthrough with pictures that got me in to the BIAB idea so thanks mate

because of where the element is located in my boiler, i think next time i'll try to either partition it off with a mesh grill or just transfer the wort to a fermenter, then carefully move the bag around the element and lft out.

A link to this guide from Rich would be great if someone could post it. (I would normally search but at work and on the phone and I will forget by the time I finish).

Cheers

1st sample taken last night and it's reading 1.008 and same again tonight.

I let the SWMBO have tonight's sample and in her words, "That's bluddy lovely. It tastes like you should be sat in a beer garden with it"

Bottling tomorrow. Not one for wishing my life away but looking forward to the end of August now :D
