1st AG Set up - Advice needed

Hello Everyone,

I have been lurking around this site and making kits for a while now and want to make the jump into all grain.

I would eventually like a three tier system but am probably going to start with BIAB. I would like to be able to produce 70l and am thinking of a 100l Bergland stock pot with two 13amp, 2750 Watt elements from the heating element company.

I have absolutely no idea when it comes to what power will boil what amount of liquid so would really appreciate your input.

My questions are:
Will those elements be enough to boil my wort? If not what should I buy?
Is 70l in a 100l pot too optimistic?
What will I need to do in terms of plugging the elements into different sockets?
I was thinking of separating the grain into a few different muslin bags so that they are manageable lifting in and out, is that feasible?

Again I would really appreciate any input.

100l pot should do the elements will be fine use both to bring to the boik then switch one off you may need to switch it back on if the rolling boil isnt acheived make sure you run each element off seperate ring main in house or you will probably trip the fuse

no two sockets in same room will be on same circuit. You need to plug into different circuits....like downstairs and upstairs....I got an electrician in and he bypassed our old Immersion heater circuit and I use that now, You might get away with same circuit for a while but its dangerous, If your using the 2 elements at same time and then ( say ) tumble dryer is switched or kitchen kettle or similar the circuit will overload.

No problem putting grains into a couple of different bags.

i have just finished building my 100l (98l) bergland pot boiler, i can recommend the elements from the homebrewbuilder. come in both 2.4 and 3kw power options 100% SS and seal ever so easily with a nice fat silicone oring

after wiring to leads and plugs..

and in the boiler..

the long length of the element tube circa 4 x 300mm (1.2m) means its got a very low watt density for its power and is unlikely to scorch the wort, and the boil covers the whole pot rather than running up one side as can happen with smaller sized elements of a similar KW raiting.

and when u consider they come complete with seal locknut and rather sexy solid SS housing to cover the electrics, are very good vfm...

definitely 1 element to 1 ring
i use my cooker switch for 1 element that has a plug on which is a separate
and another socket on the normal ring main socket
and try to keep your mains cables as short as possible

+1 to using cooker switch socket for 1 element and garage socket for the other.
