thanks all! im going to go down the plastic hozelock type route as its convenient for disconnecting and clean up while keeping the cost sensible :

evanvine, for the thicko's amongst us (me) how does the bypass valve work and why would you need it?

If the valve is fully open the pump just recirculates round the loop (no or minimal output).
If the valve is fully closed the pump acts as normal (no by-pass effect).
In between settings of the valve regulates the flow to a desired rate.
