1.36 a pint

I don't go up north every often, but I was in a Sam Smiths pub in Scarborough (The Golden Ball) and paid around 2 pound a pint for Old Brewery Bitter . A mate then had a pint of their Mild and it was 1.36 a pint !!! :-o

I was astounded, haven't paid those sort of price for decades - more used to 4 quid a pint down here in the midlands and 6 quid plus in London. Is this the norm in Sam Smiths pubs?

Not in London SS pubs. I remember a few years ago the prices in SS pubs here were comparable to SS pubs up north(apart from in central London) so beer was a lot cheaper than other pubs in London at the time. But then SS put the prices up to be comparable with what other London pubs were charging. I haven't been in a SS pub for a long time so dont know what the prices are no

I guess SS are doing that to just to keep themselves in business, but it's destructive to the industry. After Duty and VAT, that £2 will be around £1.17 which doesn't leave much margin after production cost. Can't be much money for wages of everyone involved from brewing to serving.

I was in the Princess Louise at Holborn only a few months ago and the beer prices were well below all the other places around there. Can't remember exactly but definitely well under 4 quid for the bitter.

Perhaps when they put the prices up a few years ago they haven't been steadily raising them (as much) as other pubs? Like I say I havent been in a SS pub for ages and very rarely go into central london pubs

Last time I was in a SS pub in London (The Anchor Tap by Tower Bridge) it was very cheap for pints but expensive for their bottles. This was about 5 years ago, though.

At those prices i'm guessing they make 50p a pint, the mild being 2.8%ABV for the cheap tax costing them £40 a cask and the £2 ish one costing them £75 ish (a bit lower than you average bitter maybe normal up north). For that to work they must sell serious volume (obviously).

i like that bar. my wife and i have a few days in scarborough every year and i always have a session in there on a afternoon.
the stout is always spot on :thumb:

My old local was a Sam Smith’s place. They reduce overheads by only using their own alcohol and have their own brand snacks etc. Don’t pay tv costs and don’t have middle men, the bosses deal with ordering, meeting license holders etc. That was what they told me anyway......

+1 for the Princess Louise in Holborn. I always head there when I'm in London. I have a right good laugh at punters trying to order a pint of Carling.

worked for SS for a few years.
no music license. no tv. own brand everything. very tight ship.

the man himself is an odd ball.. you would think he was just another farmer when he walks in. and had a habit of firing bar-staff for the smallest of things.

if i turned up to work with a can of coke the running joke was that i better finish it because if be gone if Sam walked in and saw it in his premises.

Historically Sam Smiths has always been pretty cheap.
I went to college in York in the late seventies and it was always the cheapest beer on offer then. Probably because it didn’t have to travel far from Tadcaster where it is brewed.
I haven’t seen any for sale outside Yorkshire for years. Shame, cos the Old Brewery Bitter is a fine pint :thumb:
