    Elderflower Champagne

mine has come out really nice, if rather lively! took a bottle round to a friend's mother's wake and opened it, unfortunately it decided to fountain out of the bottle spraying all over the kitchen!

    Very Lively Beer

I'll try that, hope it works as the brew smells and tastes great, just could do with more of it in the glass and less on the floor/my lap!

    Very Lively Beer

I just opened my first bottle of nettle beer and it was like some kind of eruption, by the time it stopped spraying out there was only half the bottle left! Is there anything I can do to try and prevent this happening with the other bottles?

    Elderflower Champagne

hmm, I only put in about 1/4 of a teaspoon, think I might add some more as it's not doing anything yet!

    Elderflower Champagne

I am trying out the river cottage elderflower champagne recipe, it says if fermentation doesnt start naturally that I can add some yeast, how much should I add?

    Nettle Beer

It's in the bottles now, just waiting to see how it turns out! was still pretty sweet tasting when I bottled it so hoping it mellows a bit more!

    Testing Alcohol Content

I am currently brewing a batch of Nettle Beer but even though I increased the quantities by 50%, it wasnt deep enough to use my hydrometer and I dont have a test jar! Is there any way to test the resulting brew for abv?

    Nettle Beer

ended up working out from several other recipes that you dont pack them in! worked out I had picked just the right amount (1 carrier bag full!) It's bubbling away as we speak, should be ready for bottling in about a week!

    Nettle Beer

I am going to make a batch of nettle beer, I have the nettles washed and ready, the recipe calls for 8 liters of nettles. Obviously I need to use a measuring jug but do I just fill with nettles loose to the top or do I have to pack them in?

    Nettle Beer

cool, I'll try the Munich Malt, although I already have some Muntons Premium Gold Yeast so think I'll probably try that and see how it goes!

    Nettle Beer

I've found a nice little recipe for nettle beer that has some hops in there too, I've decided on progress hops but am not sure what variety of malt to use! any suggestions?

    Racking query!

I may try that, or maybe some dried chick peas or something with a bit more weight to them! although I reckon the washing powder and hot water method should eat through most of it!

    Racking query!

well thats it all racked then bottled! gonna try cracking one open on sunday to see what it's like!

    Racking query!

yeah, the washing powder and really hot water got rid of 95% of the residue, left it overnight then rinsed it really well! there were a couple of bits that wouldnt shift, but I had the rather genius idea of sticking the lance of my pressure washer into the container and that blasted away what...

    Racking query!

tried the glass bowl and there was still oil residue, trying the washing powder now, if that doesnt work gonna try oxi!

    Racking query!

Thanks, gonna try the glass bowl trick now!

    Racking query!

I cant be 100% sure that all the oil residue is gone, I've scrubbed the inside as best I can using a sponge scourer on the end of my long plastic brew kit spoon!

    Racking query!

my first homebrew is pretty much finished fermenting and I have a dilemma! I dont have a secondary vessel for racking, what I do have is some 20 liter screw top plastic cooking oil drums. I have cleaned them out as best I can and am in the process of sterilizing them, I was wondering if I can...
