Do Refined Sugars Cause Fusel Alcohols?

I suspect not, but I feel like I've been spoiled by coming into homebrewing so late - I want a taste of the not so good ol days as a reference point! :laugh8: Who knows though, self experimentation and experience can yield some surprising results!

Do Refined Sugars Cause Fusel Alcohols?

First of all I just want to say thanks for everyone's input! As a new homebrewer this is why I post on these forums - it's great to see such a free flow of information and views and it definately has given me a lot to digest and think about which I appreciate on my new quest for homebrewing...

Do Refined Sugars Cause Fusel Alcohols?

This sounds like the most likely reason - For me, I've realised half the battle in learning homebrewing is seperating old outdated/misconstrued data from the new and articles echo'ing it like its gospel Thanks for all the input folks!

Do Refined Sugars Cause Fusel Alcohols?

I've been doing a fair bit of studying into Fusel Alcohols and I'm fairly happy with everything I've learnt so far and think I have a decent grasp of most of the causes and how to avoid them. One thing that struck me as odd however and I haven't been able to corroborate it is that refined sugars...

Welp, My First Batch is Done!

Fairplay, I got that your second message was in jest but the tone on the first was lost on me - its hard to tell in text sometimes :laugh8: Apart from the spitting into bottles thing of course

Welp, My First Batch is Done!

****, you mean to say I've been doing it wrong this whole time? :?: I've seen plenty on forums and including the big man John Palmer that many people seem to cite around homebrewing communities, that your best doing it with an auto-siphon and to keep the whole biome of bacteria in your mouth...

Welp, My First Batch is Done!

Aye, thats what I was telling myself as I was going, guess I was a little excited and anxious getting into the whole racking thing for the first time! Deffo going to use the keg next time though! :D That's an interesting way to go about it, I didn't think of that. I'll have a look see on...

Welp, My First Batch is Done!

The beer tasted nice, quite fruity but not overly. The hop flavours were a bit subdued but I don't know if thats becuase its still to condition or if its as another user mentioned on one of my posts about the dark malts overriding the hoppiness. It was a Muntons American Style IPA that came with...

Welp, My First Batch is Done!

After a month or so of research, investing in the some of the cheaper gear and using my first beer kit I've finally gotten to the stage I was waiting for. Bottled beer! I have to say the racking/bottling process could have went smoother and me and my bro who helped were a bit clumsier than I...

Which movie(s) have you watched recently?

I've been watching alot of Korean movies lately; I don't know what it is but they just consistently make really great films. If your not too thrown off by subtitles, I highly reccommend The Battleship Island and The Age of Shadows.

Beer Kits - Do the Pro's still use em'?

@Poddyc The kit actually had a dry hop addition of Summit pellets, which I added in at day 4. However as you say @robfor the beer does have a very dark colour to it! Uh-oh  I'll have to wait n see but I'm hoping I don't end up with Best lol

Beer Kits - Do the Pro's still use em'?

Some really good advice and reccomendations here! Its good to see that some of the kits we have available today are regarded to be of good quality, especially reassuring as I wait on my first kit beer to ferment right now :D I got a Munton's American Style IPA and everything seems to be going to...

Beer Kits - Do the Pro's still use em'?

As a new brewer my first decision was to try out Beer Kits. After a bit of reading they seemed like the place to start and get my feet wet so to speak and my first beer kit batch is fermenting right now. I was wondering though do a lot of you who have been brewing for years still use them or do...

    Hullo New Brewer here

Aye here's hopin'! Reason I bought it was to take advantage of the colder temps, wasn't expecting it to need such high fermenting temps, I'll need to bust out the blankets!

    Hullo New Brewer here

Ah right, that is confusing since the kit says its for Lager haha Of course - the brand is 'Simply' https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B008CYB6JU/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

    Hullo New Brewer here

Ah! - It would be nice if those several articles i read and google searches mentioned that, instead of letting me think ALL lagers ferment at cold temps :laugh8: True, the kit seems very minimalist. I suppose ya get what ya pay for! Thanks for your help!

    Hullo New Brewer here

The sachet says Beer Yeast on it and the bag with the malt says on the back 'Dried Yeast'. It was a pretty cheap kit - dunno if this helps

    Hullo New Brewer here

Hey all! Just put together my first batch of beer today in the fermenter, an American Style IPA! I've been doing a bit of research the past while on homebrewing since I have no previous experience and decided to try out with kits first before investing in more gear. Quick question while I'm...
