great, thank you very much! :D

    Bottling before fermentation stops

Well, without knowing very much about what these figures mean, I think I have 1.004? Does that sound about right? :) I hadn't known about carbon dioxide coming out when it warmed up - that sounds like a likely explanation for the continued bubbling!

    Bottling before fermentation stops

Hello! I hope that this isn't too basic a question to ask - I wasn't able to find an answer by searching, but I may have been looking for the wrong search terms. I'm making beer from a kit (BrewFerm Oud Vlaam's Bruin) which has three stages of fermentation: the beer is fermented in a normal...

    cultivating cider yeast

I hope the OP doesn't mind my butting in with a related question? I followed pretty a similar recipe graysalchemy describes above - I put the sediment from a bottle of Old Rosie into the bottom of a steralised demijohn with a slug of apple juice and have left it for four days now. Seeing no...

    Airtight fermenter?

Great, thanks for the advice. I'll keep my wine bottles for some other purpose, then, and go out in search of more fizzy drinks bottles! :)

    Thanks! I'll do that :)

    Airtight fermenter?

I hope that no-one minds my using the same thread now for a different question, rather than creating a new thread. It's now been sitting in the fermenting vessel for a week or so, and I've been collecting bottles ready to bottle it in the next few days. I've got a whole mixture of different...

    Mead making query

So after racking and topping up with a bit of the original mixture (I did go for this option because once I'd moved it across and left behind the sediment, the space at the top seemed very significant..), I've seen no further fermentation - it's settled, relatively clear, and hasn't been...

    Airtight fermenter?

Thanks all! Glad, for immediate purposes anyway, that the youngs bucket isn't airtight - I was misled by the instructions about making sure the lid seals all the way around ;) My first brew is now in the bucket, sitting under a table. Exciting times!

    Airtight fermenter?

Thanks :) If just leaving the lid loose isn't a terminally bad idea I think I'll just do that with this first brew rather than buying any more bits.

    Airtight fermenter?

Hello all :) A complete beginner query here... I've just bought my first beer kit - young's brewbuddy as I was advised by the chap in the shop that it had all of the necessary equipement and added up to cheaper than buying the bits separately. However, having opened the kit and had a look at...

    Mead making query

Great! I ordered some plastic tubing to syphon it from ebay earlier in the week - I'll move it across as soon as that arrives ^^. Thanks again for the advice!

    Mead making query

Thanks for the link! It's now stopped visibly fermenting - no longer bubbling through the airlock, and it has cleared dramatically over the last day or so. Would now be the time to transfer it to another demijohn and top it up with some extra mixture and yeast?

    Mead making query

Glad to hear that there's no need to worry about oxidation. It's now bubbling through the air valve quite regularly! My recipe was just sort of the average of the different recipes I read online, with rather a bias towards easier ingredients which I actually had :P It ended up as 5 and a half...

    Mead making query

Thanks for the advice! I'll wait until it's not fermenting very visibly and then top it up. At that point, should I top it up with just water, or with water and honey?

    Mead making query

I've only had one attempt at brewing previously - cider, which didn't go particularly well (it mostly just sat and didn't do anything). I've just started my second attempt, which is at making mead - I read a few recipes online and have set some going. The problem is that I managed to spill some...
