I’m having a cask bitter as a reward to myself after finding an intermittent fault on our garden lights that kept tripping the circuit breaker. We’ve not had the lights for the last two nights because of this and really missed them. It turned out to be a string of 240v LED garden lights on the...
No I don’t have a recipe, sorry.
We get the train into St.Ives from the Saltings or St. Erth - plenty of parking, the train isn’t expensive and the journey is short. Not so good if you can’t walk very far - although you could say the same for most of Cornwall!
You’d probably like Sharps Original too but will struggle to find it. I do know of one pub in Cornwall where some of the locals refused to accept anything else. I believe it’s now only made in small batches to the original recipe and available only at a few outlets.
I last had Sharps Original...
Probably nowhere near that. I’ll do some more testing but I imagine it will be very little based on this initial trial. There’s also the question of how long it takes to prepare.
Yes but the air has lots of CO2. Pressurising the bottles with pure CO2 speeds the process markedly.
The sediment is precipitated chalk not yet dissolved into the water - I did rather overdo it though because I wasn’t sure how much might be needed, in the end it looks like far less is needed...
This morning the bottles were fairly clear so I thought this might be okay to test.
In the end I only tested the first bottle because this simple trial has shown very encouraging results. In fact it’s worked too well and maxed out my test kits because the alkalinity is off the scale. I...
The next day - actually it was later in the day so probably after a day and a half, I wanted to see if there had been much change in alkalinity. The bottles at that point looked like this…
This is where I had a problem, as soon as I loosened the cap the torrent of bubbles escaping from the...
Then I added to each bottle 10g of precipitated chalk, this stuff…
After adding the chalk I gave the bottle a good shake and you can see it turned very milky.
I then squeezed all the air out of the bottles, which I fitted with a carbonation cap, and pressurised each bottle to 25psi with...
OK, I have some preliminary feedback on making high alkalinity water…
To start, I cleaned 3 fizzy drinks bottles (2 litre) with sodium percarbonate, rinsed each in fresh water, then rinsed each in Starsan, finally rinsing three times with distilled water. I hoped that this would mean there was...
It does. This is a group buying and selling pub stuff so there are some bargains. If you want a Boel itap though it could be worth a punt given their retail price - if you can find one!
If I didn’t already have one I’d happily risk throwing £10 away just for the possibility of it being real.
Not me selling but something just popped up on Facebook that might be of interest. 2 month old iTap for £10. Looks like there are a few too.

I’m starting with a cask bitter. I have two cask bitters; one coming to an end and the other is still young. I’m trying the young beer because I want to know how it’s coming on. Very nicely!
We’ve got friends round tonight so I’ve selected some beers to go on tap we will both enjoy.
Left to right Cider, Dubbel, Strong ale, Golden ale, Best bitter, Brown ale, Porter, Stout. Also, cask bitter.
