January 2021 comp - American pale ales

Too late to enter? I can get it in the post tomorrow. And how strict is this on US hops only? I have an pale on keg which is brewed for my globe trotting sister in law so has some US and some NZ/Aus hops too. If it's allowed are they any tips on botting without any special gadgets? Just...

Keezer for collection in London SE5: £90

Hi, I'd like to take this if it's still going.

Yep, I have the spreadsheet template suggested elsewhere and my local water report to plug in to it. If the quality difference in the beers with water from Tesco and my tap is really noticeable I'll start doing a treatment on the water for each brew. I'm hoping at my level (and lack of...

I finally got around to a brew after the Christmas break. I had ordered grain from Maltmiller and specified a fine crush. I also took the time to set up my Beersmith profiles to pretty much match my set up/process. I got much better OG at 1.062 for a Cascade SMaSH IPA. It was near enough...

Thanks Matt and others, I think you're right and it's just efficiency. I am curious what I can do to improve that however so thanks for the idea on the crush. I get it crushed by the shop (homebrewcompany.co.uk) so I'll ask what they suggest. I don't think I'm on the scale to by a mill yet...

Hello all. Gradually getting my brew days more streamlined but I'm still finding basic issues and don't think my knowledge is up there yet to fix them quickly. Any input would be much appreciated as always. I had another brewday yesterday and was aiming for a SMASH Simcoe IPA. I've enjoyed...

    Christmas Ale

For my Christmas brew I’ve just added the spices to a 6% oatmeal stout. A few cloves, a cinnamon stick and teaspoon of ginger. I wasn’t sure how to do it safely so I soaked the lot in some boiling water and then drained before adding to the FV. Four days to go to bottling day so fingers...

    Brew kettles

Yeah I'm hoping so. I had a bit of singe on the element from a second IPA attempt. I took a taste yesterday when adding the dry hops and that seems to have had little to no impact so fingers crossed!

    Brew kettles

Was planning to bottle that IPA batch this weekend and as expected it's totally ruined, smokey to an almost acrid degree and leaves a very unpleasant aftertaste. Bottled a few up on the off chance but it's a drain pour. I brewed a Brewdog clone yesterday and I'm worried the same thing has...

    Brew kettles

Yeah I suspected as much. When I went out to the garage for one of hop additions the caramelised smell hit me as I walked in and I knew the game was up. We live and learn! I'll get some towels out and see how we get on this weekend.

    Brew kettles

Good news then I suppose. Though I fear my IPA is going to go the same way as the batch you mention, disappointing as it was supposed to be kegged and ready for some guests at the end of the month. Do you turn the element off and insulate during the mash? I would imagine a similar issue could...

    Brew kettles

I'm currently using an all in one Peco boiler for BIAB. I've had two brews now where the element has ended up with burnt on material and I think it's added an unpleasant bitterness to the beers (still in fermentation / carbing so can't be sure). This has me considering moving to a more...

    Newbie BIAB brewdays

Thanks for the help all. Had a brewday yesterday attempting an IPA. I ended up with about 13L in the fermenter with OG of 1062. I'd have gotten more in but using as much hop pellets as I did left a lot of material floating around and I struggled to avoid disturbing it with the siphon. Seems...

I'll get the thermometer into the mash then and see how it looks in amongst the grain. I've been relying on the probe in the water below the grain which is obviously not cutting the mustard. The mash isn't particularly thick but best to check I guess!

That's very useful thanks. I'm relieved and now excited to get another brew on the go (should be this weekend one I've got a batch out of the fermenter). I'll try and get more boiled off and take on the advice about the mashing.

Thanks for the ideas. I'll up my temperature next batch and see how it goes, I was using this based on some reading around on the beersmith site. I've been using the boiler heating element to maintain the temperature during the mash. Is that likely to be an issue? Regarding the measurements...

    Newbie BIAB brewdays

Hi all, Recently got into brewing and am really enjoying it. However I'm keen to get my quality and consistency up to better justify the days spent in the garage. My first big concern (of quite a few) I'd like to sort is my terrible mash efficiency. Any pointers would be much appreciated...
