    Cracked corn,malt etc

I have found the problem with some local shops is that they focus on kits rather than all grain and therefore they do not turn over their malt and hop stocks very often. Fresh ingredients are more important to me than price.

    grinding grain

I keep my grain (whole and crushed) in a plastic bin with a lid and I place one of THESE demudifiers on top of the bags of grain in the bin to keep it dry. Obviously do not use the fragranced versions....

    Supermalt as a yeast starter?

Why wouldn't you use DME or LME? Are there measurable benefits for using wort made from grain yourself?

Trying to Source some Ingredients for a Recipe

+1 for TheMaltMiller. I think the only ingredient Rob might not have is the Chocolate Wheat but for the sake of only 50g I think you could easily sub it for another roasted malt. I would go for one of the Carafa Special dehusked malts. He has a light munich by Weyermann

    Home malting rootlets question

Check out out these two videos on malting at home: PART 1 PART 2 Part 1 has good tips on checking that the grain has sprouted enough. Part 2 answers your question about 5mins 30 secs into the video - apparently the sprouts have high protein content and it is better not to include it in the...

What do I do with cluster?

Its funny how a hop can give so many different impressions. I wanted to try out Cluster so I used them in an extract brew using light DME and steeped crystal. I only did a 15min boil and used the whole 100g pack at 15, 5 and 0 min stages. It turned out really well with the hops giving a lovely...

    Homebrew Shop Roller Mill Review

I recently upgraded from a corona type grain mill to a roller mill bought from The Homebrew Shop in Aldershot. It is listed on their website HERE. I thought I would post a little review in case it helps anyone else looking to buy one. Anyway here are some pics and my thoughts so far..... Lets...

Wai-Iti Hops - anybody used them?

That wasn't my brew was it Rob? I seem to remember dropping you off a bottle or two last year...? Nice to see you have more in stock this year! This is the recipe that I used with Wai-Iti: Wai-Iti Pale (Blonde Ale) Original Gravity (OG): 1.049 (°P): 12.1 Final Gravity (FG): 1.012 (°P)...

    Aiming for something 6Xish

I dodn't think Wadworth 6X has chocolate malt in it but it does have crystal malt. I would replace the chocolate with crystal and maybe a very small amount of black malt for colour...

Lazy Man's 15 Minute Light APA

I have used this method several times for extract brews and it works really well. It means you end up using more hops to get the IBUs required but then again adding hops in the last 15 or 20 minutes is something that some craft brewers in the US have done to good effect. Obviously when going...

    Malted Oats

The info is listed on the Beersmith site HERE EDIT: The BYO website has a potential 1.034 SG rather than the 1.037 stated on beersmith.... :hmm:

    Getting started

Welcome on board riverjunky! 1 How do I add yeast? Chuck it straight in or mix with water? - You will find opinion is split on this as some sprinkle it dry and others rehydrate. If you sprinkle then make sure you don't just add it in one clunp - spread it over the surface. If you rehydrate...

Omega Hops - Anyone Used Them??

I am thinking of buying a hop plant this year just to wind the wife up a bit more.... . I was going to get a centennial rhizome when they become available in a few weeks but then I thought I should go for something that I can't get hold of as easily. Aplus Hops are doing Omega hop...

    AG#41 - Coffee & Donut Stout

Sounds like a fun recipe. That amount of coffee sounds like it should be too much so it will be really interesting to hear how it turns out. I am confused by the donut reference though - was donout used in the brew at some point? :wha:

    T90 Hops in FV

I switched to using pellets for dry hopping rather than whole hops wherever possible as they seem to work better. I wouldn't bother mixing them with boiling water first - just chuck them in and they soon hydrate and form a layer of mush on the top then the bits cascade down through the beer and...

Malt Miller - which 25kg bag of pale malt?

I have tried the Fawcetts and the Crisp malts and could not detect any difference. However the last bag I bought was the Dingemans Pale and I have found the beers to have a more malty character. Maybe I am getting better at brewing or maybe it is the malt - who knows? But at £28 I would buy it...

US-05 is a floating cake OK to whack it to make it drop?

It will drop of its own accord eventually. The trouble is that it can take longer than it should if like you say it welds itself to the FV. I have had this happen several times and have just run a santitised knife around the inside of the FV wall (being careful not to scratch the FV) when I...

    AG#22 Hobgoblinish Ale

Everything went very much to plan thanks Rob! I started to take some pics but that fell by the wayside after the mash - we were too busy chatting. We were due to start at 8am but I got up a little bit early to start heating the water so we could hit the ground running when Grant came round...

    old fashioned beer??

I agree it does sound interesting. Wouldn't three pounds of lactose make it rather sweet though?
