    airlocks

I don't know about your climate and the bug life in your area, but if I were to leave the airlock off my fermeneter, I would be looking at a goopy layer of mold atop my beer in 7 days. In the early stages of fermentation, the CO2 flushes all the air out of the fermenter, however as the...

    Original Gravity doesn't measure up

I was aiming for 5 Gal, (19 L.) I used pellet hops. (not whole leaf.) Anyone have an ingenious way to dispose of 10 lbs (4.5kgs) of water soaked 150 deg F (66 deg C) grains. They tend to melt through my large garbage bags. What a mess! Kage

    Original Gravity doesn't measure up

Update: thanks to all the help from you kind folks, on today's brew I achieved the recipe's OG exactly. Here is what I changed: Reduced the water in mash to the volume you suggested. Fly sparged, roughly matching inflow to the MT with outflow. Recirculated for 15 minutes (after reading...

    Valentine Arm?

Hi all, I am intrigued by the Valentine arm. Partly, because I am anxious to build a setup that increases my dismall extract efficiency :hmm: , and partly because I love brewing gadgetry! :thumb: Hats off to whomever devised this magnificant device. I noticed the V-arm was hooked...

    Original Gravity doesn't measure up

Vossy, What formula do you use for extraction - something that has (OG/litre)/(kg of grain). (I can do metric too!) 8-) I remember some formulas from a brewing book I used to have, but I lost the book in a flood. Do you know the formulas or do you get the numbers through software? Cheers! Kage

    Two Brews identical...

Homebrew is like Snowflakes. No 2 are alike. There are so many variables and without a commericial brew setup it's near impossible to duplicate a beer. I have brewed the same recipe 5 times (a very popular honey blonde ale), I've had differing OG's, bitterness, clarity, alcohol content, etc...

    Original Gravity doesn't measure up

MEB, I salute you, rarely-sober friend from the Southern Hemisphere  I read this site about batch sparging: http://www.bayareamashers.org/content/m ... arging.htm Is this acurate to your procedures? and can you reach high efficiency? After research and the help of all you kind...

    Original Gravity doesn't measure up

Thanks for your hospitality! Any favorite grain mills? Homemade or store-bought sparge system? Since my local brew store went out-of-business, I ,ust order online, and I can no longer oversee the milling. Also I have had to build up stockpiles of ingredients, because I never know when the...

    Original Gravity doesn't measure up

Vossy, thanks! If you don't mind me asking, what equipment, techniques do you advocate: (false bottom, manifold, screen in the mash tun, sparge system (tank, sprinkler, or just pouring onto a plate, etc)) How long do you sparge? Sorry for my US units, In my haste to answer my questions, I...

    Original Gravity doesn't measure up

thanks for your well-thought-out reply. I use sparge water at 175 (mash out) and I have tried many different rates from very slow (2 hours) to fairly rapid (30 minutes). I do a conversion test to assure that conversion is complete before sparging. When you say that you wait until there is...

    Original Gravity doesn't measure up

Hi Everyone, I need some advice on extraction efficiency and OG. I am an all-grain brewer, having started with a pic-nic coller w/PVC manifold mash tun and graduated to a Polar Wear Pot with a false bottom. No matter what my methods or equipment, I can never seem to reach the OG numbers on...
