    Advice needed for wedding plans

Thanks very much for the replies (sorry for not posting sooner, but I've been away all week). If I rack to a secondary and add the finings then how long is it best to leave it for before kegging? I have some gelatine leaves and was wondering if they are appropriate? My thoughts are to rack to...

    Advice needed for wedding plans

Hi all, I'm going to be getting married in a couple of months and intend to put a couple of barrels of my homebrew (an IPA and a sweet brown ale, both AG) on at the reception. I have bought a couple of barrels for this which are designed for a gas system, but since it'll all get drunk on the...

    Munton's Gold Ale Yeast

Hi All, Just a quickie. I'm contemplating brewing a sweet brown ale shortly but have run out of Safale 04 yeast. However, I've got a packet of Munton's Gold ale yeast and several packets of Munton's standard yeast knocking about. I was planning on just pitching the Gold yeast because I read...

    Disaster Zone!!

It has a circular grey disc like the base of a kettle or an electric hob in the bottom of it. I gave it a good clean before use and, as I said, the only thing in the boiler at the time it cut out was wort (no hops, no sugar). Perhaps the cut-out on mine is overly sensitive? Clutching at straws...

    Disaster Zone!!

Well I'm quite tempted to ring Brupaks on Monday and see if they've got any advice to offer regarding the safety cut-out. It does seem overly sensitive. For what it's worth, here's my recipe in case anyone fancies making their own "Disaster Zone": 3kg Maris Otter Pale Malt 1kg Wheat Malt 250g...

    Disaster Zone!!

By the way, should the batch survive and become a finished beer then it will be christened "Disaster Zone" in memory of its birth! Right, I fancy a beer... :drink:

    Disaster Zone!!

Second AG brew today and was going really well until the boiler (Brupaks 29 litre enamelled boiler) cut out just as the wort came to the boil. I initially thought that this was the safety cut-off activating (although the red light hadn't gone off), so turned it off and unplugged it for a minute...

    Storage Questions

My first AG batch is fermenting away nicely and I am now considering what to brew next. My nearest decent homebrew shop is a half-hour drive away so I thought I'd stock up in bulk to avoid having to keep making trips every time I want to do a new brew. So basically I was wondering what the shelf...

First AG brew - advice welcome

Sounds like a sensible idea to me, so if it happens again next time I'll have a bit of an experiment with the spent hops.

First AG brew - advice welcome

Pictures of some similar hop strainers can be found here: http://www.brupaks.com/boilers%20mashtuns.htm Mine isn't quite the same as those, but they're pretty close (I have the enamelled 29l boiler in case this helps). I didn't try slowly opening the tap at first I'm afraid - I just opened it...

First AG brew - advice welcome

Thanks for the encouragement! I'll let you know how it turns out... though there wasn't much thought went into the ingredients really. I was going to make a bitter with just 30g or so of the black malt to give it a darker edge, but got my sums wrong converting from lb to kg so found myself with...

    Secondary Fermentation and Bottling

Opened up the bin last night (24 hours into fermentation) and skimmed off the top layer of brown stuff, taking care not to disturb the thick yeast layer underneath. More brown stuff is in evidence tonight (48 hours into fermentation), but now the yeast pancake has diminished notably - very thin...

    Secondary Fermentation and Bottling

Yep, just been up for a look and there's definitely a layer of darker stuff starting to form on top of the foam. I pitched the yeast almost exactly 24 hours ago so I'll have a go at creaming off the scum when I get home from work tomorrow.

    Secondary Fermentation and Bottling

Thanks for the tips. I'm definitely leaning towards risking transferring to a secondary vessel after a few days now, especially since I made a right hash of draining the boiler and probably have all sorts of 'added extras' in my wort that it could do without. Don't think I'll bother with DL's...

    Secondary Fermentation and Bottling

First AG brew yesterday (see the other thread I started) and I wanted to ask for people's opinion on secondary fermentation and bottling. I've seen a few different opinions and not sure which is generally considered the best. I've got "The Big Book of Brewing" by Dave Line, and in it he...

First AG brew - advice welcome

First post here so hello to everyone. Yesterday I had a crack at my first all grain brew (I've been brewing mead for years and have brewed from beer kits a couple of times as well) and just about survived the experience. Mostly proceeded as planned except for a few moments of 'excitement': 1...
