    Electric chainsaws...

Two simple reasons. 1) to have an electric starter motor, and do away with the starting handle. 2) so our government can legislate a minimum % battery vehicles sold, so driving all car makers (one of the few remaining industries) out of the UK.

    'Residue' in wheat beer bottle

The 'issue' could be to your advantage, if you want to harvest it to make a starter. I've had Hacker Pschorr Hefe Weissbier, off Amzn UK,. All bottles had settled yeast at bottom, but not sure if that means Amzn stored them upright, or just didn't store them for long. Hacker Pschorr...

    Doombar

Not too sure. State of the cat was only unknown, while unobserved. While Carling can be both, flavourless and disgusting, even when being observed (tasted).

    Doombar

Like supporting the local. But only know one landlord (near Penrith), that always sells an excellent pint of TT, and he's nearly 300mile from home.

What if some people are genetically unable to perceive astringency,

Are some people just genetically unable (through polymorphisms in their TAS2R38 gene) to perceive astringency, from tannins in (their) beer, or do they just like it? And is this why, ideas on best way to use Black Malt, vary so much, and why we get astringent commercial beers? When I started...

    Golden Ale Hop Schedule

Hope your first brew back, went well. Haven't done a golden ale (yet). But for amber ales, I'd started edging towards a lower BU/GU, the last being 0.56. Usually just with boil hops, @60 & 15min., though once with half of the EKG as dry hop. Would be interesting to hear what effect the...

    Whirlpool/hopstand vs dryhop

The article, says that IBU was measured with a spectro-photometer. The 50 year old, standard test method, which doesn't reflect the perceived bitterness. A study (by Maye), also listed on the excellent scottjanish site, describes why the IBU test, may have little meaning for dry hopped beers...

    Stuck imperial stout

1.145 OG so you're maybe aiming for 17% ABV. With very high OG, you need to oxygenate a lot, and hit it with a lot of healthy yeast. Aiming for 15-20 million cells per ml. For the 1.125 ( equivalent total) OG, Award stout I did early this year: 1) prepare a 1 gallon starter, made with DME...

Suggestions for low, or alcohol free, weizens. Or Guiness 0% clones

This old thread https://www.thehomebrewforum.co.uk/threads/peebees-brewday-low-alcohol-beer.77965/page-4 has lots of usefull info, including yeast choice. And the Rye IPA recipe there, sounds like a good starting point. But posts there, say that low ABV beers don't need long conditioning. Many...

    Recommend me a digital refractometer

As MashMonster said, a digital refractometer is great for monitoring mash progress. It doesn't have to be accurate, to show when sugar level has stopped going up. My cheapo one, usually gives a brix reading, that converts to an OG that matches my hydrometer to within a couple of points. I've...

Brewzilla Gen 4 advice and experiences

That happened to me once. I now do most of the sparge, with malt pipe only part lifted. Then the final litre or two, fully lifted. I have an extender, and only ever used it for boiling a couple of big beers. But using it to prevent sparge spray, hadn't crossed my mind. I now stand the BZ in a...

Suggestions for low, or alcohol free, weizens. Or Guiness 0% clones

    1) The brew dudes bitter sounds promising. But wonder if suggested chilling, to end fermentation early, might lead to refermantation issues later. 2) Wouldn't mind trying an IPA, but didn't find that Lactose gave satisfactory 'body' (in a blackcurrant sour beer). 3) I'd also wondered about...

    Hole size for S30 valve

An alternative might be to drill a new hole for your chosen connector, and seal the S30 connector (fill it's holes with cyanoacrylate glue). I use the S30 cylinder system (with top tap King Kegs). But recently had to seal up the release on a new style, stainless steel valve, that would hardly...

spider monkey ipa - suggestions please

Now six weeks since brewed. Desired haze, has remained. Despite it being in garage, and having had a few freezing nights (a couple were -7°C). Only trouble, it's so popular that there's little chance it will even last till Christmas.

Suggestions for low, or alcohol free, weizens. Or Guiness 0% clones

Does anyone have any recipe suggestions, for brewing clones of Erdinger alkoholfrei weizen, or Guineas 0%? Or other worthwile, low alcohol beers. And is bottle carbonation possible? As far as I understand, low alcohol beer needs to be pasteurised (at 70°C ?). For how long? I guess that all...

WHC Banana Split yeast and other WHC yeast

I'm hopefull. Banana Split smelt amazing during ferment, if you like bananas. But it ended dryer, FG being 3 to 4 point lower than same (usual) recipe using Mangrove Jacks M20. Just carbonating now, so awaiting final tastings.

    Electric chainsaws...

Agree, that sharp chain should produce wood flakes, rather than dust. But, find the small difference in chain speed, means it isn't worth using a petrol saw, when mains electricity is available. Because a petrol saw is usually 'running', even when you're not cutting,. Battery tools are very...
