Interesting that you favour DME over LME. I'll have to check my notes and see if the beers that had less LME in were better.
I think I've only done one DME-only beer, which was a saison... and come to think of it, I don't recall any twang in that one.
* slow realisation dawns *
If this is...
I've been a member since I turned 18. I will be quitting when my current membership expires, for the reasons I outlined on a similar thread a few weeks ago.
For my first effort I want to use only grain in order to determine if the persistent off flavours I’m getting are a result of using extract or something else I’m getting wrong.
Great idea. I've got a few of those Really Useful Boxes (other storage box brands are available...) in various sizes. They're Polypropylene so should be food safe. I'm going for a quick mash so hopefully it would keep warm enough. I guess I could wrap it in a sleeping bag, or see if one of the...
I'd like to have a go at BIAB AG using the equipment I currently have to see if this eliminates the 'homebrew tang' I seem to get with kits/extract brews. If it does, I'll invest in more kit (basically a bigger stockpot).
My biggest pot at the moment is a mere 8L. What's the maximum amount of...
I don’t think even Brewdog would manage a 1.5OG!
Just played around in a calculator. You’d need 28.5kg of DME in 20L to hit 1.5.
An FG of 1.115 delivers an eye-watering 50.48% ABV.
I know this is of no help to the OP.
Sorry :)
Hmm, just checked Coopers website and they reckon their yeast is good to 27C.
Maybe I should just use the kit yeast and do a comparison between 20C and free ferment.
Probably just wasted your time! Sorry folks :)
Hi all
Just bottled my pink grapefruit saison so my FV is free for a new brew. No time to do a full brew schedule so going to do a Coopers Stout kit and play around with it.
I only have room for a 15L temp-controlled ferment so normally split the can and do two brews one after another. But...
I would do exactly that - give it at least a month or two. If it comes good eventually, you’ll kick yourself you wasted so many bad ones!
Brew some new beer - it’ll stop you obsessing over the duff one.
I don’t know if it is or it isnt. I’m not the OP!
But it’s definitely a possibility, as the OP hasn’t said whether it’s gone flat over time or went flat very quickly.
My first kit was also a Razorback and I got homebrew tang. In my case it was more medicinal than bitter.
My later brews haven’t had it as much since I started using sodium metabisulphate (Camden powder) to treat my water for chloramines.
But if it’s flat because the barrel has a leak, that’s not going to help.
How long has it been in the barrel? You may need more yeast if you’re going to repackage it in bottles after a lengthy secondary fermentation.
