    Upside down tap

I was just cleaning my FV and took apart the tap and noticed that I can insert it upside down. It would appear to work fine, but I was wondering if anyone else had done this and could confirm whether or not this works. Basically I expect it would reduce the amount of trub you get out of the tap...

    Why Do We Do It??

I like it because I get to make something I enjoy the end result of. I enjoy the process and the science behind the various variables which affect the outcome of the final product. The tinkering and building stuff is also a big plus. For saving money? not so much, unless you're making kits...

    Safale K-97

I recently did a SMaSH with k-97. It's a nice yeast that flocculated well. The beer was super smooth with nice small bubbles and a great head. Although it does make your farts smell quite bad

    Open Fermentation.

I also plan to do an open fermentation (in a fridge though) for a weizen. I'm doing a series of the same recipe whilst changing a variable along the way. I did find this great explanation on why open fermentation produces more esters...

    Might have an infection

Fair enough, I'll leave well alone then. Thanks

    Might have an infection

Currently fermenting a weizen using WLP300. Everything went well and was bubbling away at 21C for a few days, waft of bananas coming out of the fridge. Decided to take a gravity sample today (day 5) and pretty much at FG. As usual I took a taste. Firstly the smell was a little off, but the taste...

    Lidl Saskia water - 12L for £1.49

Like this idea. Anyone used these as a mini fermenter for split batches to try out different things?

    Lager Fermentation Temperatures

Just listened to this podcast, if you fast forward to around 1:02:30 they talk about breeding new strains that ferment cleaner at higher temperatures. Then proceed to talk about higher lager fermentation temps are ok at homebrew level, but at commerical volumes they still have to keep the temp...

    Primary Fermentation period when bottling.

In the past I've left it in primary until I get a constant gravity for at least two consecutive days. Then I bottle and leave it in the bottle for about two weeks at room temp and then chill it. If I cold condition, I drop the temp when I hitthe constant gravity for a few days (2-5) and then...

    Ingredient advice?

Plus if you go to search recipes you can also specify the ingredients you have and filter by that

    What did you brew today?

    Sven's 2018 brew days

I was way over volume, so I'm attributing the missed gravity to that. I guess I could have boiled longer, but I was short on time. I'll probably repeat this again after I've done the other experiments I want to do. I am looking forward to tasting it though.

    Sven's 2018 brew days

Did my first brew for my series of Wheats at the weekend. https://wurstbrewery.co.uk/2018/02/03/weizen-brewday-i-biab/#weizen-brewday-i-biab Apart from the low gravity, it all went nice and smooth

Any opinions on Speidel 30l plastic FV

Luckily for me I am blessed with fairly slender arms. The advantage of being a programmer. No chance to develop much forearm muscle :)

Any opinions on Speidel 30l plastic FV

The wilko buckets look decent. Good price too. Thanks. I don't use the taps to decant, I still Syphon off into a bottling bucket. Maybe I'll give the Speidel a try then once my current buckets have expired. Sounds like they are decent bit of kit The large screw tops also look good. I wonder...

Any opinions on Speidel 30l plastic FV

I'm currently working with the usual buckets and have no real issues, but I am aware they have a finite life span. I'm not quite ready to splash out on steel buckets (I'd also need a bigger fridge I think), so I was looking at the Speidel 30l fermenters Is it worth using these over buckets...

Made a Firefox extension to convert units

Updated recently to add EBC and Lovibond conversions. Planning an update to add config options to only show conversions from metric->imperial or vice versa. Any other suggestions?
