Are we wasting our time with whirlpool/hopstands?

Not an assertion...that is literally what they did. Straight from the horses mouth. In their very early days they used a kids football game that featured a vibrating pitch so the players moved around (I had a similar game as a child too) and used that vibrating plate to try to create a...

Hop rocket T90 dry hopping to the keg?

In a recent experiment to recirculate beer from my fermenter through a hop rocket and back into the fermenter so I dont have to dry hop the beer directly I removed the internal gubbins from the hop rocket apart from the top perforated plate (hop rocket mounted upside down on top of the...

This is a fun watch. Struggling to find a similar thing showing meat eaters eating vegan food for the first time...

    Water Chemistry

Good rant...I have alot of sympathy for that. Ultimately the key is to choose one calculator and stick to it...then everything is referential. Ideally you want to be experimenting with water additions/chemistry anyway to see how it impacts the final beer and the key is to start from a...

    Pinter for all grain…

Don't forget you also need a blow off valve. Spunding valves can fail or become clogged and if that happens you have a small bomb on your hands. I assume the Pinter has a secondary emergency blow off valve.

    Sodium metabisulphite. How much?

On the basis that one of the uses and properties of SMB is that it is an oxygen scavenger then what is the shelf life of SMB? I've always assumed that once you open the packet and expose it to air then it much go off pretty quick? I've only ever bought it in as small packets as I can assuming...

    Sodium metabisulphite. How much?

Gotcha...my bad. If half a tab works then according to Wiki a typical camped tablet contains 0.44g of SMB...so half a tab should equate to around 0.22g.

    Sodium metabisulphite. How much?

I've used 0.3g per 20 litres in the past which I believe is towards the high end of the suggested band. Don't tend to use it routinely. Have used it in cases where I've had to fill a keg with an open lid rather than a closed transfer and used it once where I was rousing yeast in my fermenter...

Adding fruit puree without making a sour beer

Most commercial beers with fruit I've tried have failed to convey much if any fruit flavour at all. Just tried a fruited sour from a well regarded UK brewery over the weekend and struggled to pick up any fruit flavour from it...it was a sour and just got the sourness and beyond that pretty bland...

    Electric cars.

Well the 'market' (it's not actually a market in the basic definition of the word) is very skewed so hard to judge where the actual demand is. About 7.5 million used cars are bought every year vs. just under 2 million new cars with a good chunk in the EV sales has been driven by company cars so...

    Dumping Trub / Bottle Conditioning

Even a good cold crash and fining beer completely eradicates yeast in the beer that is available for secondary fermentation. that is essentially how cask beer works, despite being fined before packaging and during packaging there is still secondary fermentation that takes place in the cask...

Are we wasting our time with whirlpool/hopstands?

Good point and sort of supports me questioning this...Clearly SN uses dry hopping, and I have a whole load of other questions about dry hopping. Shame the turn around for a been is so long as I'd love to back to backs to test all sorts of things, but I cant brew every day let alone every week...

    Boel iTap

This link takes you to a page that says the product is not 'available in your location' so maybe Abel have just tried to get around the export by routing through HK rather than moving the company and manufacture/assembly or some other get around which doesnt work in the UK. Shame it's a great...

    "That homebrew taste"

Oxidation is definitely enemy #1 but for me also the homebrew twang was from a combination of fermentation temperature and control and water chemistry and mash ph. As soon as I started paying attention to those things then the beer was a lot better and stopped tasting like homebrew. Not sure...

Well everything has a price...offer me £10 per kWh and you can use my charger and pee up my wall anytime!!

    Electric cars.

Cant think of anything more horrific....having complete strangers turning up on my drive to use my charger, knocking on my door with their kids that need the toilet, and other not so pleasant people peeing up the side of my house, pulling in more traffic into my nice quiet cut-de-sac, and living...

    IPA using Voss ?

Used Voss before…went through a kveik phase a couple of years ago when it seemed it was the ‘in yeast’ so tried most of them available at the time. All beers turned out fine, but for me all kveik beers have a sort of common flavour running through them, a sort of underlying funkiness. Not...

Are we wasting our time with whirlpool/hopstands?

Seen a few things recently about commercial breweries not doing whirlpool/hopstands...at least not in the same way as us home brewers do. Us home brewers lower our kettle temp to 80 degrees or lower before adding the hops and steeping for a period of time. However it turns out that alot of...

    Ultra processed food

Think people are under the misapprehension that we actually understand any of this from a fundamental scientific perspective. The reality is there has been zero proper scientific studies done on any of this stuff and the 'science' that is peddled in the media is all based on correlation studies...
