    Beer just refuses to clear.

The flaked barley will produce haze easily. Have you used it before? I avoid it in anything other than dark beers.

    Beer just refuses to clear.

If you're storing it between 1° and 10°C, could it be chill haze? What was the grain bill?

    First abject failure... but why?!

Are you tasting and smelling other things ok? I've had a mild cold for a few weeks and my sense of taste and smell are suffering.

    Secret Santa Beer Swap 2018!

I received mine today - Teddy's Stout. I love stout and can't seem to make a good one so I'm really happy with this. Looking forward to drinking it.

    James Morton - Brew

I have 4 brewing books, this one, Radical Brewing, Greg Hughes, and a collection of recipes from small craft breweries. I always find myself returning to James Morton's book, for both recipes and advice. I wholeheartedly recommend it.

    James Morton - Brew

Hi Ian, I'm in Ayrshire where the water is also very soft. It's ideal for IPAs, wheat beer, lager, anything up to dark amber beer. My porters and stouts have always been pretty disappointing. Even with water treatment. But as Braziliain said, if you're happy with your beers just now, then I'd...

    Derogatory term

When I said we're not easily offended over here, I was mainly referring to us us forumites. Of course, the general British public these days seem to be offended by anything and everything. When I was younger, the terms Gerry helmet and Jap's eye were frequently used. I think these days those...

    Derogatory term

I've never heard anyone on this side of the Atlantic use the word Yank in a derogatory way. But as you said in your post, in America it may have different connotations. As for us - Brits, British, Pom. I can't speak for everyone, but were generally not easily offended.

    NEIPA colour.....

Cheers Stigman. I'll just go for it. And I always use pellets anyway so I'm sorted there. For my first NEIPA I'm more concerned with flavour first, appearance second. Success in both would be great.

    NEIPA colour.....

I'm brewing @stigman's NEIPA next weekend, and after reading this thread I'm a little wary as I have no means to transfer under pressure, and my control of exposure to air/oxygen will be old fashioned. I'm using London Fog Ale yeast. I appreciate I won't hit the style, but I'd imagine it'll be...

2018 Beer World Cup - Second Round Match 8

TT is a good, middle of the road beer. I prefer Duvel, but for many drinkers, I think the Belgian flavours are way out there. So I can see how TT has done so well.

Yellow Belly beer could be discontinued over trademark dispute

I agree that the message is a bit mixed. I honestly wouldn't pick that bottle off the shelf, regardless of the intended message. It just seems wrong, and almost makes light of the KKK.

Here we go again - Baby It's Cold Outside

Baby It's Cold Outside targeted as being an example of sexually coercive behaviour. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-46413209 In my view, the man in the song is simply concerned for the lady's well-being. The clue is in the song title - it's cold outside. Chances are she would not...

    Fuggle duck: my house bitter

I think the difference between the keg version and the bottle version is serving temperature. The keg version being too cold.

    Fuggle duck: my house bitter

I brewed Foxbat's bitter about 6 weeks ago. Bottle version much better than keg. Good showcase for English hops. Keep getting marmalade notes. Anyway, thanks Foxbat for the recipe, it's a great beer.

    Show us your beer.

My first lager, a Munich Helles. Really happy with it. Very quaffable. 6 weeks in the bottle, carbonation took ages, probably due to the long cold crash.

    Upgrading to oxygen

I want to upgrade my aeration from an air pump to oxygen. Can anyone give me any pointers on kit required and where I can buy suitable O2, either online or Glasgow/Ayrshire area? Thanks

What happens when mash pH is too low?

I used Imperial yeast A10 Darkness, which has an attenuation range of 71-75%. So I guess I'm just 1% off the bottom of the range. I mashed at 65°C. Previous mashes at 67°C or higher resulted in low attenuation. On that basis I'll bottle it. This brew was a last effort to try make a good...
