    Water Treatment And Starters

Still not convinced this is something to worry about with a starter: http://howtobrew.com/book/section-1/yeast/yeast-nutritional-needs/aeration-is-good-oxidation-is-bad Not saying you are wrong mate, the chemistry of oxygenation, aeration and oxidation will be way over my head !

    Water Treatment And Starters

Oxidation (as long as introduced into ambient temperature wort and not warm/hot wort) is a good thing in the early yeast growth stages. Most of us beat the daylights out of our wort or run it through a sieve etc into the FV prior to pitching yeast. So definately no harm done at all - your beer...

    Water Treatment And Starters

I only use tap water in my starters (boiled then cooled etc just like yours). I do treat my main brewing water with a campden tablet the day before brewing. You will be fine, the 1-2 litres you are pitching into a 20-23l brew is such a small percentage , once diluted will make no discernable...

    Late addition hop bitterness??

You will get a little bitterness addition from your flameout hops, for however long your wort temp remains above 80°C. I think the calculators don't add any bitterness from flameout hops as it will be very small impact and they don't know how long it takes you to cool to 80°C with your...

    New Hydro

It was just a thought, I guess you either live with it and adjust for the .004 discrepancy or return to supplier. Wilko's do one for £3.50, you could give that a go and hope for an accurate one !

    New Hydro

Just a thought but some need to be read from below the miniscus and some are meant to be read from above the miniscus. Are you reading it correctly ?

    Spapro's Brewdays

I quite like a lager but have found the couple of 'proper' lagers I have brewed a bit of a PITA - tie's up the brewfridge for weeks and weeks. So decided to get a Kolsch on the go - SWMBO has been full of cold this weekend so she wanted a quiet weekend tucked up at home. So gave the chance of...

    Spapro's Brewdays

Did a Brewday on Sunday, went with a recipe based on the 'Oatmeal Extra Pale Ale' from James Mortons book 'Brew'. Toned down the grain bill a bit and also used different hops from my freezer - used Mosaic, Simcoe and Willamette Added a yeast starter built up from a St. Austell Proper Job...

Have you got a Fray Bentos Pie in the larder ready for your brewday ? Other than that your list looks fairly comprehensive to me.

Plum Wine, Oily surface in Demijohn

Plum Wine, Oily surface in Demijohn

Thanks for your thoughts. Plums were grown on a small tree in our back garden, so not treated/sprayed with anything. The plums were rinsed off and then mashed with campden tablets and some boiling water then left before adding the yeast. Demijohns were cleaned out with oxiclean and rinsed...

Graham Wheeler brew your own British real ale ??

If ordering some supplies you won't go far wrong using a 50-70 EBC crystal for pale ales and maybe 120 for bitters and darker beers. Only other way round it is to enter the recipe from the book into something like beersmith or brewersfriend (Free and quite good) and you can see where the EBC...
