    Preparing equipment for first brew.

The thermal mass of the grain does help to hold temperature. Are you working inside or outside? There's a strike temperature calculator on brewers friend and I find it's usually pretty spot on. Always worth having some hot and cold on hand just in case you miss temperature. I wrap mine up in a...

    Preparing equipment for first brew.

With the grain in there it'll hold temperature much better. If its cold I'll put a kettle of water first to let it heat the mash tun up a bit before adding grain or water. Did you wrap it in blankets, coats etc? Is it a cool box mash tun?

    Cover for heating element

I've used kettle elements on my boiler. To cover the electrical outer parts, I took some baby tupperware type bowls complete with lid and stuck them on. The lid has a small hole for to cable to run through and the bottom of the bowl has a hole that fits over the electrical connection housing...

Fast brew recommendation - running low on time

Never done it myself but I done a brew Wednesday and it was fermented out by Sunday. I massively overpitched because i'd made a starter for two batches but was only able to get one done and itll be a number of weeks before i can brew again. So it got a double dose of yeast and was at (or...

    disheartened

How long are you giving the bottles to condition? Some of my beers taste great after a week, others need a month or two.

Over 1000l of steriliser for 35p

Starsan is pretty good. My bottle cost me 22 quid about 11 or 12 months ago and is about 4/5ths full. 22 quid for 5 years approximately is good value. It's also very convenient, I use a calpol syringe to measure 2ml in to a 1 litre spray bottle and use that for everything. I don't like having...

    Carbing bottles on their side.

That's the plan. I've drank a few just put in the fridge for a day. Still a bit cloudy and yeasty as expected but good. I never realised there's a potential issue with nucleation as Ajhutch mentioned.

    Carbing bottles on their side.

****, ive got about 100 bottles carbing on their sides at the minute. Never even gave it a thought. My plan is to give them a swirl/shake before moving out to the shed for upright storage.

3,200 jobs at risk at Toys R Us

It is a shame but Amazon, as the best example in my house, is usually cheaper or the same price as "physical" shops, and a whole lot handier especially when you've got wee ones. Jobs lost through store closures are counterracted by jobs created in warehouses, delivery drivers, web designers...

Which is the best grain for head retention (and %)

Yeah I'm sure the glasses are clean. I've found the bottles have good carbonation and a livelier pint when quite young but this seems to fade over time. I do quite like a livelier pint and am thinking of using brewers friend calculator plus 20% and seeing how that works. I've got some recent...

    Gunge.

There was a guy a while back (Jon something maybe?) He seemed to get in to all grain very heavily, very quickly and seemed to be spending heaps of cash on gear. I haven't seen anything from him, been looking out for him in the for sale board.

    Gunge.

He's maybe had a week off work and has taken the opportunity to clear lots of bottle/kegs ready for new brews!

Which is the best grain for head retention (and %)

I'm ****** if I know. I've had recent brews with carapils and flaked barley. I've had an oatmeal stout with obviously plenty of oats plus a heap of flaked barley and still not great. I think I may be having carbonation issues with PET bottles but that aside I should be getting better retention...

Can you use laundry bleach to clean pressure barrels?

I've got chemipro oxi which is pretty good. Since buying a year ago at 20 quid and almost running out I'm looking to replace it. I've seen from on here that most folk use oxi clean from poundshops, b&m, supermarkets etc. This is likely what I'll go for if it's such a saving. However, we have...

    Sanitising bottles

I give the bottle a rinse immediately after pouring and later that night or the following morning, a good rinse in hot water. Upside down to drain a bit, 6or8 squirts of diluted starsan from a skooshy bottle, lid on, shake. On bottling day just pour the starsan out and fill with beer. Easy...

    Recommended Hop Combinations

I'm just going to put 50ml or so, adjust as required, in to each glass. They call it hop bombs I think. Someone posted a video link on another thread a few days ago.

    DIY PP brewing kettle

My kettle is HDPE and it holds 35 litres of boiling wort very well. Never a leak or any kind of softening at all. It is much heavier duty than even my heaviest FV though. I'm sure I got it from geterbrewed and they'd advertised it as suitable for converting to a kettle. The valve isn't...
