    so who gets gout..

JCR, have you tried a systematic control of your diet? For example, eliminating certain items one at a time for a period to see if there is any benefit. I'm thinking in terms of post 21 above; you might find something that triggers your gout. You could try all the high-purine foods, bran...

Man repeatedly punched pet dog in face in Newbury

I feel the same way JCR. Our penal code is inadequate. There should be severe punishment for any form of intentional animal abuse, and I see nothing wrong with the death penalty for cases of extreme cruelty.

Man repeatedly punched pet dog in face in Newbury

They all seem to be noisy. My current two live in my study (two or more is always best; they are social flock birds and one alone is not natural). The cage door is closed only at night when they go to sleep, the rest of the time they come and go as they wish. Interestingly, one is very...

Man repeatedly punched pet dog in face in Newbury

I think most animals have far more intelligence than most people give them credit for. Certainly more than most politicians. Even budgies care - one of mine (sadly RIP some years ago) was one of the most emotionally aware and caring creatures I've ever come across. He was rescued, and had...

Pull yourself together!!! Tell your slave to clean the mess, and if there are any more threats you'll set Mrs Robinson onto her.

    Price of things in 1971?

I have a clear memory (probably caused by shock) of the first time a pint reached the £1 barrier. It was about 1975, +/- 1 year, in a pub in the City of London. I had routinely and fairly frequently gone for a drink with a few friends, but after that event we decided to get real and...

    Prince Andrew

JCR: Are you saying that you're sure she has NOT seen it? Maybe she's a closet home-brewer, and a member of this forum with a contrived user-name and avatar.

    Price of things in 1971?

Prior to that it was even more fun. We used to have 480 ha'pennies in a £, and 960 farthings in a £ (anyone remember them?). Also we had groats, which were each worth 4d (i.e. 4 old pence). In the good old days you could buy a woman for 3 groats. (Or was that goats?)

    Tips, Tips, Tips

A tip: If you use a red-hot poker to do something unpleasant to someone you don’t like, then you use the same poker to mull your ale, make sure you wash it thoroughly between the two uses.

Or, of course, to make mulled ale.

Nah. A hot poker was used in the middle ages to do unpleasant things to people they didn't like.

That sounds horrid --- do you mean you actually had to take the polish into your mouth, then spit it onto your shoes? Did they teach you how to clean your mouth afterwards?

    Prince Andrew

It's worth bearing in mind that he isn't a genuine prince, and there can be no doubt that he is fully aware of that. I believe "soaking the system" is one of the appropriate terms; there are others, some of which are distinctly impolite. To be a prince his (grand)parent(s) would have to be...

letting the fizz out of the bottles

I'm all for ease of measuring (and everything else). When I make a 40 pint kit and the instructions are to add a teaspoon of sugar (per pint) to prime, 1 teaspoon is 5ml so for 40 pints that's 200ml of sugar to batch prime. I decant by pouring carefully from the brewed-in bin into a clean bin...

I was once told by an RSM that it also makes excellent boot polish. How do Guardsmen always manage to have the toe-caps of their boots so brilliantly shiny? Clear nail varnish.

    Specific flavour in stout

If I knew how to do it I’d put one of those little laughing face things in here. I didn’t mean the “brussels sprouts” bit to be taken literally - I thought that was clear from the “or similar”, but perhaps I was too obtuse. The sprouts comment was an implication that bearing in mind the...

    Winter ale

I've just been exploring that book a little. This sounds interesting.... MAHOGANY – A CORNISH DRINK A mixture of two parts gin and one part treacle, well beaten together. At a dinner given by Sir Joshua Reynolds on March 30, 1871, when Dr. Johnson and Boswell were among the guests, Mr. Eliot...
