Last Night Hop Aroma Oil Changed My Life!

Is anybody else here playing with Hop Aroma Oil? It's not the CO2 extract with a lot of bitterness, but 'pure hop oils extracted by physical separation methods'. I bought 3 to try from The Malt Miller, Cascade, Citra and Nelson Sauvin -...

Oats and Wheat - Brewdog Instamatic

The black line is a water proof electrical temp probe. The clear tubes are a water cooling loop.

    Is my Beer brewing?

Both fermenting vessels I've seen in Wilko have a hole for a air lock. https://www.wilko.com/en-uk/wilko-fermenting-bin-lid-25l/p/0022555 https://www.wilko.com/en-uk/wilko-wide-neck-fermentation-vessel-25l/p/0075885 Are you sure you didn't buy a pressure keg? I started out brewing a few...

    Using river water for brew?

Would simply sticking a Camden tablet in the water be enough to sanitise it, plus the wort boil of course?

Oats and Wheat - Brewdog Instamatic

Best I had made to date... but I'm still a newbie! Not exactly like Instamatic but still very nice. I wish I let it ferment to a lower final gravity. I went to 1010, I think it would have been better down to 1008 or 1006. I like dry beer. I don't think I'll use wheat in my beer again though. I...

    TWO Infected Brews, help!

Thanks for all the information chaps! Is thin bleach just weaker, diluted thick bleach, or does thick bleach simply have added thickening agents? Talking about chloramines and phenolic compounds.. I've no idea what TCP tastes like (but I know what TCT feels like :p) I wonder if this might be...

    TWO Infected Brews, help!

I don't feel confused, I'm interested in all the options and how they actually work. Today I bought some thin bleach. It was hard to find actually - I went to Wilko, Iceland, Nisa, Savers even Boots, but only found thick bleach. Finally gave up and drove to Asda and got the Smart Price thin...

    TWO Infected Brews, help!

Any of you use Campden tablets in the actual wort, or just for rinsing the equipment?

    TWO Infected Brews, help!

Two interesting points here! So forgive my lack of understanding but I presume a 'sanitiser' is a cleaning agent and removes bacteria like soap, rather than kills it? That certainly isn't the impression I get from the way people use it. I thought it was a bacteria killing agent. Second point -...

    TWO Infected Brews, help!

    Maybe this is iodophor? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vanodine-V18-Disinfectant-1litre-for-pigeon-poultry-etc/183792520686?hash=item2acae34dee:g:rG8AAMXQBg5RsQQ2

    TWO Infected Brews, help!

Thanks guys. I feel a bit better about things now! I'll start using Star San or similar as well as getting a new fermenter bucket (only £10). I also already wanted a better siphon. The keg I'll try to sterilise with bleach, then Star San. ..where do you buy Star San at a good price in the UK...

    TWO Infected Brews, help!

Hmm.. you know I think the last two times I soaked the hop socks and grain bag in it, but didn't rinse. I actually thought sodium percarbonate was a non-rinse steriliser, although I do usually rinse everything. EDIT: Oh yes, it says on the pot "shake off excess moisture, do not rinse".

    TWO Infected Brews, help!

I foudn this interesting description of infections in beer: https://learn.kegerator.com/off-flavors-in-beer/ I think mine might be Butyric acid taste.

    TWO Infected Brews, help!

Hi, I've done a number of brews with no problem, usually I think I'm pretty good at being clean. My last two have been infected though :'( I think the first one became infected when it over-flowed the fermenter. After that happened I put a couple of tubes through the lid so it would over-flow...

    Temperature Control

Just thinking out loud here. I don't know about the InkBird but if I made this as a DIY kit I would use an Arduino. A single power supply could be used and a double pole relay could wire the peltier in cooling mode or reverse the connection for heating. It is as simple as switching the wiring...

How to sterilise a siphon which has been in infected beer?

Is metabisulphite solution really necessary? I thought the oxygen in bleach will rapidly break down with air or sun light and simply leave sodium chloride (salt). Adding a small amount of bleach to water can make it safe for drinking, but you need to leave it in light for the oxygen to break...

    Temperature Control

P.S. In the winter I wanted to keep constant temps in the fermenter bucket so I placed it in the cellar which was around 14C and replaced the peltier with a couple of power resistors to heat the water loop. It worked very well keeping 19C within +/- 0.1C.

    Temperature Control

Sorry I didn't see all these replies. This is what I have done for the moment: W1209 thermostat PCB (comes with temp sensor) 12V 200watt PSU TEC 12706 (60watt) Peltier 12V diaphragm pump (high pressure) CPU Water Block CPU Cooler The W1209 temp sensor is tapped to the side of the keg and the...

    Temperature Control

Using a fridge or freezer is a great way to do it especilly combined with a thermostatic controller like the W1209. I wasn't very successful at finding a small one that would fit a keg or fermenting bucket easily though - most had a big lump in the bottom shelf area or have a chiller section in...

    Temperature Control

Hi Guys and Gals, I'm curious, how do each of you control temps during fermentation and also conditioning? Just changing rooms? My cellar is not very deep so in the summer (like now) it can be as warm as 20C (main rooms 24C). Also I have noticed that even in a cool room, during fermentation...
