Dark Helles recipe - comments very welcome

20g of Tettnang is low....only 10 IBU's or thereabouts at 60 minutes according to Beersmith....30g will give you around 15/16 IBU.

    Brewuk website "down for maintenance"

I don't know anyone who did. But I know at least three people who were regular BUK customers who have never used BUK since, due to how BUK handled (or didnt) their orders during covid....taking weeks to not deliver something, then taking weeks further, to respond to email requests for refunds...

    Brewuk website "down for maintenance"

Not all of them. Malt Miller continued to operate but put in place restricted ordering windows, only allowing orders to be placed which they knew they could fulfill and communicated with their customer base on a regular basis. Brew UK offered no such order management, took more orders than they...

    Lager than life competition

Melanoiden is a tricky malt to get balance right in your recipe....quite powerful stuff and easy to overdo it. Given that an American Lager is very neutral light bodied beer I personally might avoid the use of Melanoiden at all in such a beer and perhaps limit it to malty continental styles...

    Brewuk website "down for maintenance"

Yep....and if a web-based business has been without its website for a week, without prior notification to its customers of potential downtime, then that sounds pretty terminal to me....once customers go elsewhere they often don't come back.

    Lager than life competition

Yeah....I brewed a Mexican Corona style Lager that was supposed to have the lime flavours as an integral part of the beer, rather than stuffing a wedge of lime down the neck of the bottle. At least entering it as a fruit beer allows me to tell the judges what they are supposed to be...

    Lager than life competition

My late decision to recategorize my beer paid off. Was originally going to enter it as an International Pale Lager but was concerned that some of the fruit flavours might be misinterpreted as brewing/fermentation faults/issues....so decided to enter it as a fruit beer and highlight the fact...

    Lager than life competition

It just means that, after all the beers on the table were judged and scored the judges then had a second tasting of the highest scoring beers to determine the final placings on that table This helps mitigate against palate fatigue where later beers might not score as well (or the opposite where...

    Annual Homebrew Competitions 2023

The ACB comp will be later in the year...probably September....might clash with the Welsh but will be small enough not to use up too many judging resources.

    Nicola Bulley

40 years ago....me and my mates went fishing on the very stretch of the Wyre just a couple of hundred yards downstream from where Nicola Bulley disappeared. My mate slipped on an icy bank (the banks are built up as a flood defence to protect fields before dropping down to a riverside footpath...

If I'm not mistaken it was myself and my mate Keith who judged your Clementine and Passion Fruit Gose....happy to share further thoughts with you fi you can share your scoresheet via e-mail with me (assuming I am right in my opening statement!!). Between 2 pairs of judges we had about 20/21...

    National Homebrew Competition

No its not. Honestly. 🙂 A point difference on each feedback category (aroma, appearance, flavour, mouthfeel, overall) will immediately give 5 points difference....yet you probably wouldn't bat an eyelid if you saw a 1 point difference in each category in isolation. Usually a pair of "trained"...

    National Homebrew Competition

Must admit...it was the first time I'd judged with the tickbox style sheet (although I was aware of their existence) and it did take me a couple of beers before I'd got the hang of it....initially focused on ticking the appropriate boxes (and as you know...there are plenty of them all over the...

If the judges email address is on the scoresheet you could try sending them a copy and ask them to decipher. I did this once and the judge was perfectly happy to do so.

    National Homebrew Competition

We did not use those scoring sheets today. We used a "Fast-Scoring" sheet which consists of more tickboxes to highlight sensory perceptions of the beer and have a lot less space for written feedback. Judges will attempt to write some feedback but it might not necessarily be as comprehensive as...
