    Anna's Brewdays

One of the downsides of having nice beer around is the will power required when dieting. I've finally got my act together to lose a bit of weight and I'm not drinking at all Sunday to Thursday - zip nada totally abstemious... I should feel virtuous 😇 but the Dubbel made recently is annoyingly...

A bit shocked to see how much this is now - it was 30 something pounds when my Mum purchased it ! I think I'll be even more careful handling it...eek. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01BSN75JG

    Water treatment (but not that)

Your issue with brine may be with the chilling effect which over time lead to precipitation of the salt, but I haven't done the maths on how this would impact a 2% solution or if that will be enough to suppress moulds. A 2% lemon juice solution though is an effective biocide providing your water...

Ah .... sorry a wee bit late then 😂 , I hope it tastes great.

    Water treatment (but not that)

It will depend in part on your fittings, temperatures used and any risk of spillage. An antifreeze product for car usage will avoid risks of icing but you really really don't want to risk that getting anywhere near your beer. Chemsan/starsan will be a lot safer for risk of contact with your...

That's a fair heft of hops at flameout, which risks adding quite a bit of bitterness depending on how fast you can cool your wort, and will be hard to predict or replicate. I suggest to get the most of the hop oil fresh flavours you consider a hop stand, starting at just under 80 deg letting it...

4 hours after giving my yeast starter hell for not performing 😈…. Nicely active. Right adding the lot to the lager wort which is at a chilly 6 deg- well I did say the key to a lager is the pitching temperature 🤦‍♀️.

    Anna's Brewdays

So I gave in … I’d been watching the starter for the last 24 hours and not seeing any activity- I think my OYL111 was past resuscitation 💀. So I’ve added two packs of Hell to the starter and will add that to the wort later tonight. I’d chilled the wort down to 5 deg in the hope it would reduce...

    Anna's Brewdays

@The-Engineer-That-Brews it's a 3 litre flask which is made of really thick glass which tolerates direct heat. It sits quite comfortably on the stir plate and means I can make a full 3 litre starter in one go. ( My mother bought me it for Christmas a couple of years ago 😄 -she thought it was...

Personally I prefer pellets for lots of reasons, but I've loads of Saaz leaf hops so this is a single hop variety lager which I've made before. Last time I put the hops in loose and it turned the boiler into hop soup, bunged everything up completely and it had to be drained by tipping it up! I...

What are you drinking tonight 2023.

To be fair puncturing a glove during some examinations would really really lower the tone 🤢.

Loving the summer heat nails look 😀 - I’m impressed you doing those yourself. I’m always a bit envious of those with nice nails as I can’t have nails that would puncture gloves 😕

    Anna's Brewdays

Taken a bit longer than planned as heating and cooling 50 litres takes longer than a single batch. Since this is a lager and I hadn’t done a starter, I took off about 2.5 litres half way through the boil into a sanitised fllask, chilled and am using it to resuscitate my stored OYL-111 which was...

Yes - which I appreciate is not be true to the pils method but it should add similar notes to a decoctation I hope - there’s only 130g for a 50 litre batch

The joy of Saaz …. Hops for today😄 Now last time I made this it ended up like a Saaz soup and completely bunged up everything, so today these are going in vegetable bags as I’m not wanting to spend the rest of my day struggling to empty the boiler!

    Anna's Brewdays

My son had a 5 o’clock flight to catch this morning, so that meant a rather early start to drive him to the airport. Since I was up early, I thought I might as well have a brew day! 😀🎉 Not planned at all so this is going to be a bit of fun because normally I spend far too long thinking and...

Woah that is quite the colour 😱 I’ve not seen that before and I’m a bit of a fan of vault city - I’ll look out for this 😍.

What are you drinking tonight 2023.

An espresso martini just because. Actually just tasting the end of a 6 month secondment for some of the week with another NHS organisation. It’s been lovely to work with old friends and it’s been fun- but it is good to be able to be back to focus on the day role. Cheers to all my colleagues...

Lifting table? (what do you stand your on?)

I use an adapted TV stand with the glass top replaced with plastic coated chip board, and a pulley fixed above it to lift the grain basket - works a treat, but that scissor lift looks smart. My issue is now moving the fermenters which at 60litres needs one of my children to help move
