You know you have gone to far when ...?

So, I thought it would be fun to poke fun at our selves. If you homebrew long enough at some point, you're going to have an idea as good as it seems when you get round to it you realise you may have overdone it! :) After reading about the benefits of a good starter, it seemed like a no-brainer...

Hampshire, Berkshire & Surrey Boarder Meet up

It is a good point, I had assumed that most people would drive (responsibly) so I plopped it between the A3 and M3. I think we can play with the location? Basingstoke (if we can find a nice pub :D ) might be another good option as that has trains that go N,E,S & W. Any suggestion on a pub in...

    Ready for bottling?

Pump up the temp a few degrees. I ramp up my temp at the end of the fermentation to fully maturate the beer. I do this because I want the yeast to consume some of the by-products produced in the high activity phase. Also, it's pretty straightforward to calculate your pitch rate and or make a...

using Starsan / sanitiser in hard water area

What's the 1 bit of advice you wish someone had given you, which you'd pass on to a new brewer?

Brewing is an escape and to be savoured, if you don't have the time to do a brew and enjoy every minute, don't start..... Or get a no-chill cube :)

Hampshire, Berkshire & Surrey Boarder Meet up

HI All, If I organise a meet up on the border of these three counties is anyone interested? I would like an opportunity to meet other local home brewers and maybe down the line collaborate on some projects. I was thinking somewhere like http://www.thealfredfreehouse.co.uk/beer.html The Alfred...

    Chocloate goes POP

Hi All, So, I wanted to share an interesting taste test I did. Below are two IPA I brewed. I love to do my taste test in whiskey drams :) Same water treatment same mash profile etc. This is the recipe: Altering only the crystal malt and pale rye malt in for the Choc malt and barley...

using Starsan / sanitiser in hard water area

I think the challenge is most of the non-rinse are acid based, once outside their usable range they either become inert (if the water is to hard) or may pass on unwanted flavors (if the water is to soft/acidic). However this is just a guess.

using Starsan / sanitiser in hard water area

You can tell when starsan is unhappy as it goes cloudy. I have very hard water. I distill my water I use for starsan and it always remains clear (or you could buy) there other thing I have done is treat my water with AMS etc and that helps also.

    Smack pack not inflated

yeah, I have done two smack packs in the past and neither worked. One brew ended up with bakers yeast as it was a Sunday and I didn't have a no chill cube back then. The other I brought a back up dried yeast because of the aforementioned incident. I have have never used them since.

    infection

Thanks both, I used water I had distilled myself, I wasnt sure about the impact of boiling water on the fining so I let it cool after distillation. The finings were dried isinglass: It was placed in a v type lab flask based on the values on the side of the tub (1 tspn to 500lm) shaken on and...
