    hops in freezer

IainM covered it well there. Freezing will simply slow the degradation. Temperature isn't the only factor involved in degradation, and probably not the most significant contributor, but it's one of them. If you have room in your freezer, there is no reason not to put your vac packed hops in the...

    Beer Fermentation Question

Hi Jarvi. Test the gravity with a hydrometer. No change in gravity reading over a few days, and it's done. It's the only sure fire method. Got a kit on the go right now, started 2 weeks ago at 1.060, checked after 1 week at 1.020, tested this weekend at 1.013. Paying no attention to the airlock...

Instant cooler - Lindr PYGMY 20 & photos

Just a thought, but if you turned the unit down to minimum and just left it on all the time, it will probably remove any beer line tainting. And the cooling cycle is much shorter and less frequent than a fridge. So given that, and the much higher temp setting, it shouldn't cost anything like the...

Instant cooler - Lindr PYGMY 20 & photos

I used plain water and followed it until the air was entering the Pygmy, and then measured what came out. It came to 250ml. It's possible a little extra gurgled from the Cornie, but it won't amount to much. So slightly less than half a pint then. More than what I was expecting. But you'll always...

Water pH adjustment & dry yeast packets

OK, had a look at Brun Water. Thinking straight, the grain bill doesn't normally have a huge impact on the mash pH anyway, unless it's a dark or acidified. I normally treat all my water, so my sparge water, according to Brun Water, is already about 5.5 pH. Does that sound right, i.e. if you...

Instant cooler - Lindr PYGMY 20 & photos

I don't think Fil is too far out with his estimate. It won't be a lot. I'm about to sanitise my keg & line, so I will shortly report back the exact measured liquid volume in the 20 version. As I believe the 25 version will probably have about 25% more cooling coil, if you are interested in the...

Water pH adjustment & dry yeast packets

pH: Yes, I might be being daft. I'm quite clued up on water adjustment to meet mash pH (I know my exact alkalinity and hit my mash pH no problem), but for some reason I thought it was a completely different calculation when dealing with only water. I'll try looking at Brun Water again without...

Water pH adjustment & dry yeast packets

OK, 2 different questions :) I'm wanting to adjust my batch sparge water to pH 6 or less, using Phosphoric acid. I have a rough idea what my tap water pH is, and I have the 5.2 to 6.8 pH strips, so I can verify the result of the addition. Thing is, I have no idea how much acid to add to get...

    Easy Keg 5L

Thanks for your help. I think I'm pretty much sold on the 5l dispenser idea now. I saw the specs on the Brewferm mini kegs and they are rated to buckle at 4 bar and burst at 6 bar, which will be worst case, so you'd expect even higher bars than that. With 15g of sugar, I think it pretty...

    Easy Keg 5L

Thanks, you pretty much answered all my questions. Seems then it does meet requirements. Maybe I can finally put bottling behind me. I had been considering 9l cornies as a solution, but they are hardly any cheaper than full size cornies and I would be left with a big head space. Just one...

    Easy Keg 5L

To accommodate the 4-5 litre Cornie overflow, I've long had interest in similar units, but always had concern about homebrew compatibility, and found it difficult to find answers. Would you mind? I'm assuming we can fill a standard mini keg with our own brew and tap it up to this? Sounds likely...

    Racking from primary to secondary?

Useful with Cornie kegs, because the dip tube draws from the very bottom, so you would always pull the latest settled yeast if you didn't clear first. So I rack to secondary as part of a move to a colder location, but probably would just leave longer in primary if I had standard kegs or bottled.

    how many pints.....

Unfortunately, and all too often, none! Challenging to find the time. All said, by virtue of the fact that I just brewed 3 brews in the space of 9 days, it looks very likely I might break my record and have all 3 kegs completely full at the same time. Oh that will be a heavenly moment. And I...

    What to brew with Cherry

Thanks. I'm familiar with Lambic Cherry Kreik, had it last time just a few weeks ago, but I think it best if I avoid the whole Lambic thing. I hear that it can be quite difficult to get the cherry flavour to come through, so a large addition at secondary looks the standard approach. I have...

    Freezing hops?

They'll start deteriorating from day 1. Freezing just slows the deterioration rate. But unless they smell bad, they'll still be usable, but maybe just lost a few of the stated AA% points and some aroma. But it's not critical; you could always add a bit more. And maybe this years hop harvest will...

    Freezing hops?

I vac pac & freeze. Low oxygen & low temperature. I mix up my brews, so end up with hops I might not finish off for a year or so. Did some reading years ago on the subject and could find no common belief that flavour or aroma is negatively affected by freezing, only that it prolongs useful life...

Lindr Pygmy 25K Exclusive Single Tap with Corny Kegs?

Yes. Living in France, I didn't need one of those  Oh, and I did deliberate between the 20 & 25 version before I bought, and I can say that I don't feel I suffered from the lower capacity output. Of course I'm never going to drink 20 or 25 litres of beer an hour anyway, and I don't...

Lindr Pygmy 25K Exclusive Single Tap with Corny Kegs?

Hello. Yes I have the non-K version. And both above are correct; the K version uses compressed AIR to push the beer out, so can only be used in cases where you expect to empty the keg very quickly. Home brewers would almost always want the non-K version and instead use CO2 in the keg to push the...

    What to brew with Cherry

Thanks. Bugs are an issue, the reason some years I don't even harvest, and I thought boiling would be a good way round this, but boiling is out it seems. Vodka it is then. Might use coffee filter and reuse the vodka in some way :drink:. Not too bothered about precise ABV; I'll just wing it. Will...
