First homebrew, SG OK after 1 week but sample tastes 'homebrewey'

Sounds a bit like those people that miss their cars that had 'loads of character' - code for 'it broke down with amazing regularity!

Sorry to hear about your dad Nial. I hope he gets better soon.

What temperature did you ferment at? At the height of fermentation the temperature of the fermenting wort can rise above ambient - possibly taking you above the recommended maximum temperature for that yeast. Maybe this could add to a "Homebrewey twang". Apart from that and possibly...

    HELP! New Buffalo Boiler

Hi Fore, Did yours come with the slotted tap cutout? Just checked mine, and am wondering the best way of enlarging, and making a round hole. It seems to me that a q-max might struggle, as it wouldn't be easy to centralise. However, I have never used one.

    Ace electric boilers?

What are the thoughts about me adding an Ace boiler to my recently purchased Buffalo 40l? I was thinking that with the insulation, and tap, and filter, on the Ace would make a good mash tun, and the larger Buffalo would make a good boil kettle. Does 25l of average gravity wort seem doable...

    HELP! New Buffalo Boiler

Old thread, I know, but just a bit of an update from my experience. I took delivery of one of these (GL349) from Nisbets in France today. This model has no temperature settings - just Off, 1,2,3,4,5, High. Put some water in, set it to high, and it got to boiling and maintained a rolling boil...

"Cask conditioned", "nearly" real ale ...

For the uninitiated, what is an aspirator (and don't say a French vacuum cleaner!), and how would one go about attaching one to a cask?

AG2: A galaxy far far away.

Life is a compromise, and the missus should compromise if you have to! The shed will need changing if it is too small, and a water feed to the shed is a must - not too difficult (I should hope) if you already have a tap in the garden. A grainfather would be icing on the cake! After all, you...

    Blending different beers

I'm showing my ignorance here, but are you saying that pubs had brite tanks, and had bulk deliveries of beer into them? I thought it was only the breweries (or brewpubs) that used brite tanks, and conditioned their beer in them for later filling of kegs, or in the case of brewpubs, possibly...

    Forum T-Shirt.

How did I miss this post? I'm up for a couple, as long as there is no problem sending to France. I assume an increase in postal charges.

    Blending different beers

I've also read that breweries top up their brite tanks, and only remove a certain proportion, before topping up again. They use the same beer, but I guess this technique gives a consistency to the taste, and if there is a change, it is a gradual one.

    Blending different beers

A brown mixed was a popular tipple in the north west. To my shame, the first time I went into a pub (age 14!), I asked for a half pint of brown mixed! How they didn't chuck me out I'll never know. A half pint bottle of brown ale and half a pint of mild - ah! I have no proof, but as well...

    fridge question

To add to what Leon103 said: 1/ You can of course use a fridge to bring your wort down to pitching temp. However, the temperature doesn't drop in 5 minutes, so unless the fridge has been modified, you would have to keep you eye on it to ensure it doesn't drop too low. 2/ A temperature...

    What are you drinking tonight?

I have just paced it out, and it is 95 metres uphill through the woods (with a head torch on) to go and get my beer, which is in the garage! Then 95 metres downhill. It doesn't take too many before you either can't be bothered, or can't quite make it up or spill it on the way down! Maybe I...

    What are you drinking tonight?

Well, just about to go and get my second pint from my second keg of Old Conkerwood. I really need to get another brew on before I finish this, as I will go into a mild depression if I run out. I will be ok with SWIVRO (she who is very rarely obeyed), as I have done the dishes and started...

    malt extract kits

I think they have improved considerably in the last 20 odd years. My homebrew used to be quite drinkable, but I don't think you would have confused it with a commercial product. Some of the 3kg kits I have done have bettered many commercial offerings. The ingredients available for all grain...

You probably need to check the exchange rate also. They draw you in with the promise of no commission, but then screw you on the exchange!
