    So who's growing chillies 2023?

Last year i grew a habanero style chili from T&M that they claimed was not spicey at all. It was not. Which i kind of liked and i did end up useing lots of them all the time in everything. If i wanted spice i could also add some of the others as well. Really enjoyed them

    Hop plants/rhizomes - growing report

Im planning to do a covert hop grow in the corner of a field this year, they are just to big for the garden and I almost pulled the drainpipe off the wall one year with them growing up it. They grow in the country round me. Often by the river some wild ones have a good aroma.

    Dry hopping equipment

I put pellets loose into fv, stir in the floating hops everyday till they sink ...mindful of oxidation. Then put sterile hop spider into fv. Then siphon tube inside hop spider. Can handle very high levels of dry hopping.

because of interest rates and inflation. I got a **** payrise this year and face higher costs, in real terms its a paycut. At the same time where I work put thier prices up by more than I got but not as high as they would like cos customers spitting fur, in real terms thier margins are falling...

    Rolling boil or vigorous boil?

I'm a half hour lid ajar kind of person but there must have been a reason why historically people boilled the hell out of beer. Does modern malt need less boiling or what's going on ... coal doesn't grow on trees...

    Grainfather or not?

I'm so low tech I've 2 50 litre saucepans and a milk churn all stainless cos I don't like the idea of plastic and solder giving up some of their chemicals. I boil on our 5 ring kitchen gas hob and the milk churn fits in the saucepan which I then fill with cold water to chill. I'm fast and quick...

    In-line sparge heater (or not)

I do a single batch sparge and before I open the tap on my mash tun I put my boiler/saucepan on the floor to collect the wort. Can't fit two vessels on my hob anyways but I am cooking on gas.

Will milling my own malt improve efficiency?

I always crush my own malt but recently got sent a sack of crushed by mistake and rather than send it back in decided to use it. It was very fine compared to what comes out of my mill (still on factory settings) and I noticed 2 things. Dough balls everywhere and much better efficiency. It was...

Solar Panels on New Build Estates

How do people make the numbers work for solar, it's a lot of money to install, you get to use less than half the leccy generated and have to sell excess to the local power company who sell it back to you 6 hours later for 5x the price they paid you. Batteries are expensive and full of nasty...

    Malt mill suggestions please

I have a cheap version of the malt miller manual style. Mine didn't come with a mounting board so sits on top of a very large old panettone tin. would be nicer if it was properly attached to something. Also If you adjust the rollers to a very fine crush it's a lot more physical effort. Still...

    Cider production

we got our apples from the side of the road, 30 litres worth, had to stand on roof of car to reach some mind and we did have a telescopic apple picker. Took about an hour to pick. A passer by said it was nice to see them being used for once.

The apples made me do it

I made cider from crushed and pressed fresh apples. I was planning on letting natural yeasts do Thier work but after a couple of days of no activity I added some dried kviek yeast I had. Now it seems to have finished working but the cider tastes a bit sweet, like a commercial cider. Kviek is...
