    1st foray into water treatment…

I was in the same boat a few weeks ago, just make sure you take the average values from the utilities website and you should do just fine.

    What did you brew today?

The elderflower is in flower so I did a grisette. First brew using a pump and plate chiller, a bit 'exciting' at times (glad of my tiled floor...) but otherwise fine, right on the money for volume and gravity. OG 1031 30 litres Styrian Wolf Hersbrucker Mittelfruh Elderflower Mangrove Jack's M29...

    Imperial Stout carbonation

2.8 sounds a bit high for a hefty stout, I'd maybe stick around 2.0. Also depends what level of carb you like, it's your beer at the end of the day.

    General certificate in brewing

I did this when I was still working as a brewer. Useful from a pro perspective but I'm not sure of the value for home brewing, although that depends how you go about getting the qualification. I just did distance learning where I studied the material and took the exam, but if you were to spend...

Running brew kettle from Inkbird ssr or other?

    Just grabbed the box, it's actually 125 x 85 x 55mm.

Running brew kettle from Inkbird ssr or other?

I use a thermowell now, but I used to plop it in the wort. In use the thermowell is easier but it's another potential leak path, and another thing to buy. On the enclosure go a bit bigger than you think. I got one that was JUST big enough to house the controller with a bit of room to spare, but...

Running brew kettle from Inkbird ssr or other?

That looks like the one. You'd need an enclosure, some glands, and suitably rated cable for the power in and power out. I used Wago connector blocks to common the earth and for routing the L and N. They're very simple to operate, press Set, adjust the target temperature, press Set and that's it.

    Yeast pitching for consistent results

I think it depends on what your end goal is. Are you looking to learn more about yeast, save money, pitch the best yeast you can? If you regularly use the same strain then it's maybe worthwhile as like you say just buying and pitching fresh yeast each time is relatively expensive. However...

Running brew kettle from Inkbird ssr or other?

There's a temperature controller available, a WH 7016 or something like that (I'll double check the model number later), that's available with a 30A relay built in. Looks like a STC-1000 but is single output, but much higher capacity. I use this for kettle control without any issues. If...

    Help! Infection in the brewery!

With the plate chiller it's worth running a cleaning flush in both directions to make sure every nook and cranny is reached.

    All Grain Equipment Set-Up

I'm not sure there is such a thing as typical these days. Cheapest / easiest is probably BIAB (brew in a bag) which is certainly how I started out, a single vessel with a means to heat water, a bag to hold the grain and off you go. I guess it depends how deep you want to dive into the rabbit...

    Getting Back Into Brewing

A looooonnnggg overdue update! Things are still progressing, but not as much as you'd expect given it's about 18 months since I last posted. General business meant nothing happened over Christmas '20, and then I've been unwell since April '21 (and off alcohol for about 6 months 😭), only recently...

    Getting Back Into Brewing

Cheers guys. I'll hopefully have some time over Christmas to make some progress with the brewing gear and all the plumbing. Not sure there'll be any brewing happening mind you, just build, build, build.

    HERMS PID Control

I'm busy revamping my whole brewing set up and I'm taking the opportunity to add some PID control and HERMS. I'll be running a separate small HERMS pot and I was wondering what will be the best way to control it. Is it best to control the HERMS element with the PID, and monitor the HERMS water...

    Getting Back Into Brewing

Hello all, I've been a home brewer for a good number of years and used to be moderately active on some forums, but for a variety of reasons I've not done any brewing (or foruming) for a few years now. I spent 3 years working as a professional brewer too, but ironically that was one of the...
