    What's sauce for the goose.....

The German owners of Aldi and Lidl are amongst the top richest people in Germany. So they know a thing or two how to operate a tight ship. The shops also stock a small selection of branded goods more so since the pandemic. I'm biased though ....

Coopers Real Ale: first brew ever

Colour looks fine - even better when the beer has cleared. Real Ale (or IPA) is normally anywhere from light brown to dark brown. There are "blonde" ales/IPAs which are brewed with very light grains, some kits may be available. Maybe you are thinking of lagers / pilsners?

    7l pot for 5l batch

I have also started doing small batches occasionally (full BIAB), got a 14L stock pot for around £20, boil volume around 9L so plenty of room and no spillages. I agree with you it's faster, clearly with smaller volume, find it more relaxed than 5 gallons.

    General election

A lot of the UKIPers moved over to the Conservatives who under Johnson let them take over "moderate" associations, in the populist style they learned from Steve Bannon et.al. SB and BJ were close friends, not to mention a certain president.

    Brewery space disaster

Hope it'll be sorted - I expect the roofers will arrange the boiler repair or replacement as they are insured (or should be). Having had roofers round before Christmas to do gable end repairs they were quite keen to let us know about their public liability insurance (not surprised when I saw the...

    Newbie first brew

I think 5 days at around 20C and then 5 days cooler (mine go under the stairs which has an outside wall so more like 16C on average except for winter). In total a fortnight and you should have decent carbonation. I like the champagne plop when opening a fliptop bottle.

    Newbie first brew

Welcome .... you are on the way to a well deserved beer! Regarding bottling, when I did a kit first time ever (some decades ago) I felt a bit overwhelmed, 40 odd bottles, no chance of asking Mr Google wink... . But just got on with it ... 2 hrs seems to be quite reasonable with setting up and...

Rumour? is Wilko's going into administration?

I very much doubt that a few comments in THBF would constitute trying to influence the share price of a public company. Of course Wilko is not listed, and unfortunately suffers together with other UK retail businesses, many are actually listed.

Rumour? is Wilko's going into administration?

Anyone new coming to the hobby generally start with searching the web for "homebrew". Also despite all the economic problems we have people in general have much more cash to spend on non-essentials compared to say 30 years ago, they often start straight away on the automated route rather than a...

    1 Litre Fliptop Bottles

Anyone use 1l fliptop beer bottles? How much priming sugar would you add? Up to 750ml I use half a measured teaspoon which has been working well for me. That size seems to be more popular on the continent - UK supplier recommendations?

Rumour? is Wilko's going into administration?

For weeks my local branch had three beer kits on the shelf (Geordie + 2xTom Caxton). Then the Gordie disappeared (assume sold), then the Caxtons were standing again lonely for weeks. I thought I might just buy both of them @£17 each which is cheaper than online... In the end I decided to take...

    Pension protest.

Interesting - the UK government is planning to push back the planned increase in the state pension age until after the next general election. I wonder why? Are they fearing riots?

Feasibility of producing and selling alcoholic tinctures/schnapps commercially?

No clue really on the laws/regulations for this field, but as you are producing something for human consumption there are aspects of health & safety consumer protection, product liability. And your premises need to comply with the usual regulations re. food production plus you need to be insured...

What do you stand your Kettle /Brewzilla / Grainfather /Brewtools etc on?

It's got my name on it so good quality ... though mine was Wickes own brand, £25 many years ago. But I don't have fancy gear, my 15L pot stands on the kitchen hot plate..
