Nitrous oxide: Laughing gas sales to be banned, says Gove

What the hell are people thinking chucking their empties out of the car whilst driving - why not put them in your recycling bin, lots of metal. Do we have to wait until someone is hit and killed by one of those gas bottles. Not to mention the damage that inhaling that gas can do to users' health...

Yeast: not behaving like it read the rule book

I don't really delve into the scientific details, just keep an eye on what's happening. I have pitched yeast at temp 28C and worked like a steam engine, after two days no apparent activity, left for another 10 days, beer perfect. Another brew, yeast active and threatening to foam into airlock...

    Live on a canal boat...

My last company was HQed next to the Grand Union Canal in West London and I spent many a lunch hour walking along the canal path. Lots of nicely maintained boats, some clearly lived in, many just parked. I like the idea of living on a boat but the dampness puts me off, keep thinking it's no good...

    Litter and fly tipping.

The Nitrous Oxide (?) gas bottles are the worst currently. Been thrown from moving cars. Few days ago working in the front garden, heard a car and then a sort of "clink" noise. Before I could look the car had gone, and one of those large bottles lying in the gutter. Heavy (1.5 kg? empty!)...

Have a go at simple AG

I keep forgetting to make notes, take readings or photos .... but here from memory is my latest Saison creation, bottled today, based around a recipe from the "Kitchen Brewing" book: Coriander Saison: BIAB method: 400g amber base malt 400g wheat malt 500g DME medium 60g of Citra 11g packet of...

Rumour? is Wilko's going into administration?

Popped into the High Wycombe branch today, staff were already cordoning off cleared sections, steady stream of shoppers. A couple of chats with staff - everyone resigned this is the end of the company and their jobs. All one could do was wish them all the best ....

    What did you brew today?

This is more a "what have you bottled today" post. Had a Tom Caxton Real Ale Kit (purchased from Wilko's) which I split 50/50. Brewed one lot as normal, halving quantities, came out well and conditioning in bottle. For the second lot I brewed as follows (sorry no photos or gravity values): -...

    Duty increase.

I like the way the PM claimed this as yet another brexit achievement, don't remember this was a big issue in 2016, ah but then there's an election to win next year. Just wondering - no need for a pro or con brexit debate.

    Posting beer to Austria

Ever since we joined Brexit I see reports from people sending gift items to EU countries of long delays and charges being levied (reports of quick transit as well). I suggest you check with one of the big courier firms what the rules are, what paperwork is required, etc.

Are malt prices starting to drop?

I think the offers/reductions are to drum up business rather than a reflection of prices coming down. I may be wrong but we are not out of the woods yet. The rate of increases may be slowing but they are still going up. Suppliers eating into their profits. I may be wrong.

    Fonio.....interesting article

It's hardly reached mainstream western brewing, let alone the homebrew market.

Sorry, another "is this mould??" thread

It could be Bentonite ... most wine yeast compounds have Bentonite added to aid clarification of the wine. When you rack the wine you will see lots of small black specks, when you rinse out the DJ. Quote from Young's Wine Yeast Compound ingredients: "A Specially formulated recipe containing...

    Pumping the primary ferment bucket

The main event (loads of bubbling and mountains of kreusen) is generally over after 3 days (kit or all grain) but the yeast is still alive, doing it's job, cleaning out as much sugar as it can take. I normally wait up to 14 days before I bottle and then let the bottles stand for another week or...

    Jeez scary or what

Is this the semi-annual "bash cyclists" thread? Being a driver and cyclist I have given up trying to explain things ... I file most of this under "culture war miscellany".

    CML

I have a 5L Batch of CML Rye IPA in the fermenter. Should be nice from the aroma so far. If CML still deal with small orders I'll certainly place orders.

Coopers Irish Stout with a twist...

Just wondering, not much experience with chocolate malt, but will 500g not over power every other aroma?
