Bar Keeper's Friend - does it matter which type?

Hi all, I'm going to buy some Bar Keeper's Friend, but I notice that here in the UK, the most readily available version says "Stain Remover" on it, and is in a blue tub, whereas I feel like the original one is in a gold tub. I shouldn't be too surprised to learn that it is the gold one that is...

    Gravity readings

👆 100% this. When I started AG brewing, I was so obsessed with getting my efficiency up to 80%, but looking back, I've no idea why! Grain is relatively inexpensive, especially to account for a 10-20% difference in efficiency. So now, I've decided it's better to be sure that I fill a 19L keg...

    Co2 help

If I were you, I'd probably be cautious in case of unfermented sugars and go with no more than 90-100g. That should get some carbonation in it assuming no leaks this time! But as I say, you might not want to risk an exploding pressure barrel, as they are probably quite messy and dangerous!

    Co2 help

Without knowing how much beer you've got and how big the barrel is, I don't know I'm afraid.

    Co2 help

Well, assuming the sugar that you initially primed with has been fermented now, I would probably use this calculator: Priming Sugar Calculator So, let's say you've got 15l of beer in a 25l barrel, giving you 10L headspace, and you want 2 volumes of co2. That gives you a figure of 107g of...

    Gravity readings

Are you sure the correction for temperature is accurate? It doesn't seem possible that the gravity dropped from mash out to chilled wort unless more water was added at some stage. Could the first sample have been concentrated somehow? Pre-bag squishing, maybe? Still seems unlikely...

    Co2 help

If it still tastes good and not like wet cardboard or vinegar, you may try adding more priming sugar into the barrel, mixing it in very gently, and then bottling it all straight from the barrel. Then sling that barrel, or find some other use for it (it may work as a fermenter if you can make it...

    Losing volume

If you have room in your fermenter, I'm a proponent of dumping it all in. This is an interesting read: The Great Trub exBEERiment | Results Are In! In spite of that, you should dial your volume losses into your recipes to account for them and end up with 19L (or whatever final batch size you...

    Co2 help

I have used PBs in the past and haven't had a problem with the CO2 cartridges. However, I found that I only needed to use them once the barrel was nearly half-empty. The priming sugar alone ought to create a lot of pressure in the barrel, and the first couple of pints should come out like...

    Heating a conical

Hi all, I've recently purchased a 30 L SS conical. I haven't yet thought about how to maintain fermentation temps. It will be in an outbuilding, so very cold. A ferm chamber is not an option due to lack of space. I'm thinking the simplest way may be to buy some sort of heating pad and control...

    Wort chiller has turned orange

Cheers. Cheers. I reckon that's what it ought to look like. Looks as though it has dulled a bit, which John Palmer says is a good thing.

    Wort chiller has turned orange

Thanks for the replies. I cleaned it with white vinegar, and for the most part, it went shiny again. I then dunked it in a bucket of food water to rinse the vinegar off, but within a minute or two, it took on the blotchy orange stuff again. Very strange. I used it anyway and it came out shiny...

    Wort chiller has turned orange

I know that copper is kind of orange anyway, but... I've had a copper immersion chiller for about 8 years or so. As you might expect, it has the odd patch of discolouration here and there, but hasn't ever really looked much different until I soaked it in some VWP. That turned out a kind of...

Sparging on Klarstein (Ace, Hopcat, Brewdevil, etc)

I've not had any joy as those ones linked to above aren't in stock. I'm not too bothered about it as I'm getting around 70% efficiency anyway. I think for smaller grain bills, I probably just won't bother sparging. With a fine enough crush, I think I should be able to get away with no sorry...

Sparging on Klarstein (Ace, Hopcat, Brewdevil, etc)

Yes, I think I'll have to try this. Apparently they don't sell them separately, though, so I'll have to try and make something.

Sparging on Klarstein (Ace, Hopcat, Brewdevil, etc)

I only wish it was, matron! But unfortunately even at its shortest, it's still far too long!

    Disaster

I'll be keen to hear how this turns out. I've fermented at 25-ish before and made perfectly drinkable beer, if a little estery. I reckon you might know that it was a little on the warm side, but I highly doubt it'll need chucked out.

Sparging on Klarstein (Ace, Hopcat, Brewdevil, etc)

Hi all, I recently purchased a Klarstein Brauheld Pro, which is one of the all in one systems that arm to go under so many different brand names. I'm really enjoying everything about the system apart from one thing, which is the correct sparging procedure. I've been home-brewing for about...

    Persistently low FG

It is great being to get gravity readings without disturbing the beer. I wonder if I'm having this problem because it's in a carboy... Maybe it got stuck on the shoulder and that's thrown up an erroneous reading. I will definitely use it again and maybe try it in a bucket next time.
