    Faux Lagers

I tried with Ubbe Kveik last summer. It was drinkable but far from a true lager experience. Maybe I did something wrong as I'm not an experienced brewer.

How often are you making up for lost gravity points in AG?

This question was bothering me too. Then I got some iodine tincture and started doing a starch test regularly. It's different every time - sometimes it shows all conversion done before the 60 minutes mark, sometimes it needs some more time. I think there are too many variables involved, so it's...

Brew in a bag. Cloudy Beer. <help please!>

According to the almighty Wikipedia (Mashing - Wikipedia) 63C is in the range of both alpha and beta amylase. It's slightly on the lower side so should theoretically result in more fermentable sugars. This shouldn't impact the clarity. I mash in a large stock pot wrapped in a blanket on an...

    Sterilisation of Bottles

I put glass bottles in the dishwasher after use along with the other dishes. Then on the bottling day I put them again in the dishwasher with VWP instead of the normal dishwasher agent. The crown caps get soaked in VWP solution while waiting for the dishwasher to finish.

What can you buy that's made in Britain

Electricity. It is produced mainly in the UK with some occasional import when needed.

Would you still vote for Brexit?

Why not set a poll, so we can see some answers from people who wouldn't be otherwise posting their opinion ? I'm not a British citizen, so I don't get to answer the original question.

    Which Old Speckled Hen

@Cheshire Cat, thanks for the recipe. @the baron, I'm not after a perfect clone, so I'll follow your advice and adapt a recipe from these four. So far I'm more or less clear on the hops - I have some Northern Brewer and EKG, so it will be NB for bittering and EKG for late additions. I still...

How do you track your brews?

I use Brewtarget for recipe design and for recording brew day notes. It worked fine so far.

    Which Old Speckled Hen

Hi All, I'm planning Old Speckled Hen for my next brew. I found 2 recipes here in this forum and 1 in a book. They are similar but still with some differences. I would appreciate your opinion on which one should I go for. Two of them include wheat malt in a very different proportions and the...

    Ale too fizzy

I recently started using a syringe for priming. It gives me more precise dosage. Basically, if I have 20 bottles, I measure the whole amount of sugar for the batch, e.g 50 g (as calculate with a priming calculator for the particular style) and add the sugar to a measuring beaker. Then pour...

    Pilsner or lager recipe..

Hi All, I'm also brewing a lager and was thinking if what advice can I get regarding my late hop additions. I'm going to be using Magnum for bittering plus Hallertau Mittlefrueh and Saaz for flavour/aroma as shown below: Hops ========================================================== Name...

Yes, SG is specific gravity. In physics and engineering it's commonly known as density.

    Water Temp Calculations

I think you can calculate it as a heat transfer. Qwort = Qwater + Q loss Where Qwort is the heat released from the hot wort to get to the target temperature and Qwater is the heat absorbed by the water. Qloss are the heat losses which should be small if the mixing happens quickly so you can...

What do people use to help clear their beer?

I use Irish Moss in the last 15 min. of boiling then gelatine for a few days after the fermentation is complete. The beer usually comes out clear after the gelatine but sometimes it gets slightly hazy again during the bottle carbonation.

    Help with under carbonated beer

Well...given the carbonation speed and my drinking speed, it won't last long enough to over carbonate ;) For the record, it's a Punk IPA clone - slightly modified.
