A new setup for the monthly comps

I think everything you've said makes a lot of sense and there could be room for both I think. From what I can gather, there are some people looking for objective feedback and those looking for a challenge (there is obviously a some overlap) so I'd suggest we go with the 4 basic categories...

    Yeast harvesting

What I used to do was swirl up the trub with some left over beer in the fv, pour into a sanitised 1l jar, leave for half an hour to settle and the carefully pour off the top half in to a 500ml jar, that way you get rid of a lot of the heavier trub. It never looked like I got much white yeast in...

A new setup for the monthly comps

I'd say as long as it's dark it fits the category, doesn't matter if the entry requirements are quite loose.

    APA temperature and racking

No reason to raise the temp, us05 would be fine at 19. Up to you wth the secondary, some do, some don't. I don't bother, I'm lazy and I've never been convinced enough on the benefits to add an extra process.

    Fermentation Temperature Question

Aside from the temperature, a 100ml starter is pretty small. Do you use a calculator to work out the starter size?

A new setup for the monthly comps

As we seem to have stagnated, can I suggest the following revised schedule: Sep-17 American Pale Ales (IPAs, wheat, pale ales, DIPAs, BIPAs) Oct-17 Dark Beers (Stouts, Porters, Dark Milds, BIPAs as well I'd guess) Nov-17 Freestyle (absolutely anything at all, lager, sour, Belgian etc.) Dec-17...

    Which malt AG

Depends on the hops but usually between £3 and £7 for 100g
  9. DoctorMick

    Too long in primary

If you can chill the beer get it as low as you can, it'll greatly slow down the effect of the hops.

    priming a stout

Same here, the quantities used don't impart flavour so I just go with the cheapest option.
  11. DoctorMick

    Dropping

Nope, only I'd only do it if I needed to reuse the yeast as I wouldn't want alll the hop debris in there.

A new setup for the monthly comps

It seems clear that the first order of business is... How the frig do we move this forward? It's the forums competition so it's important the forum decides. We just need to make sure that: a) people's opinions are heard b) the vocal minority don't over awe the majority c) it doesn't...

    Camra,,, wtf?

I've been to a couple of CAMRA festivals which have keg beer. People always think they're dead against it, which they were, but it doesn't seem to be the case...they still need to evolve hugely but I don't think they're as stuffy as people believe.

    Camra,,, wtf?

Excellently put. I like CAMRA and Brewdog...and i don't understand why people think they should be mutually exclusive.

    Bottle condition time?

If I were you I'd try one, then try another is a week, then another the week after...you'll get to see the changes for yourself that way.
  16. DoctorMick

    Bottle condition time?

My view is different to most people on this in that I don't really agree with 2+2+2, I think the answer is much more complicated and is largely determined by factors such as style and abv. For an APA, assuming it is well hopped, I'd give it as long as it takes to ferment + 4 days drop hop + 3...

A new setup for the monthly comps

If the mods could send a message to every member with a defined question(s) and correlate the feedback that'd be the ultimate solution. I can't help but think it might be too much work tho.

A new setup for the monthly comps

I think @JFB knows you mean him! The reason certain people come out in the honours each time is: a) they're bloody good brewers b) they enter most months I'd like to change one of the upcoming months to American Ales to see what the interest is like before abandoning the competition...

A new setup for the monthly comps

Isn't that the purpose of bottle swaps? I don't really see the benefit of submitting something for a general tasting but that's just me. For me it's about being measured against other people. Even tho it has always been a competition thus far, I hope people who have entered have gained...

    Single malt oaked Scottish heavy

Try an innis and gunn beer, they're available is Tesco and B&M. I used to like them but I think it was a bit of a novelty and I'm not so keen now.
