Seasonal Forum Competition - November 17

Anyone got an entry sorted yet? My schedule went to pot when I forgot to order lactose so I may not make it in time.

    To Keg or Bottle?

I prefer mine out of mini kegs, for some reason when I bottle stout they always seem overprimed.

    recommendations for a lager kit

I think you'll struggle to find a kit of that quality.

    Rocket science ?

That’s genius and seems so obvious, dunno why I’ve never thought of doing it!

    Greg Hughes' Bitter

I used to think that but then I read something saying the foam captures the aroma (or something like that anyway!) so it actually does make a difference to the perceived taste.

My brew from scratch, what dya reckon ?

I’ve never heard of anyone boiling the malt, not quite sure what that’ll have done but I’d imagine it’ll have killed a lot of the enzymes and (possibly) extracted tannins.

My brew from scratch, what dya reckon ?

What temp did you mash at? From reading the op it sounds like it was boiled!

The fasted fermentation I've ever seen?

It is possible to still have a krausen even tho fermentation is done, it doesn’t happen often but it’s possible. Did you take a gravity reading when you opened it up?

    Brewing Encyclopedia

If you want beginner to advanced I’d go with the John Palmer book. The Grg Hughes book is excellent but doesn’t get into the detail. Also, there are a series of brewing books (yeast, water, hops and malt) which are exceptionally detailed although probably not great for a beginner.

    Bottle Priming temperature

If you have to keep them in the garage to carb make sure they’re off the floor and try and insulate them if you can.

Quick question regarding fermentation if I may.

At 1.016 I’d be amazed if primary has finished, it’s just slowed down. Personally I’d just leave it alone but, as others have said, raising the temp a little won’t do any harm and will likely speed up the rest of fermentation.

    Potential new micropub update 2

 That’s generous of them! I’ve been harassing the owners of an empty shop near me and I can’t get any info out of them as to whether the unit is even available...it’s been empty for 2 bloody years!

    Corona mill and Grainfather

The Grainfather website recommends setting your mill between 1.27 and 1.44mm.

    Be honest...

Since going AG I’ve never considered going back to kits, the difference in quality is huge imo. I have considered extract to save time but haven’t got round to it yet. Disclaimer: I use an all in one system.

Will someone please judge my beer?

If you put something in the bottle swap forum saying what you have on offer you’ll get some good feedback and a beer in return. :thumb:

    Lactose in Milk Stout

This has just made me realise I’m meant to be brewing a milk stout next week and I forgot to include lactose in my last order. Do any high street shops sell it?
