    Reintroduction

Sorry it's been a while (2yrs +!) since I've been on here and contributed!!! As said on another thread, I moved house and all my gear was buried under other gear in the garage so I've not had the chance to brew. But given the current climate (and a severe lack of other options to pass the time...

Busy times from home brew shops

This is literally the decision I made the other day. Not brewed in 2 yrs since I moved down to Devon and all my home brew gear never made it out the garage, when I saw that everyone was panic buying booze I thought "what better time to dust it all off and get back into it again?"...but it would...

    Gales Yeast

Oh I always check. Generally so I know to avoid as I'm impatient and dont usually like waiting a few days to settle after ive bought from the shop/disturbed the sediment etc

    hop flavour longevity

Hmm, I thought i was ok with that but will look to see if there's anyway I can tighten that up.

    hop flavour longevity

But how do commercial ales manage to keep that freshness over time?
  13. chuffer

    hop flavour longevity

I'm finding that my bottled beers give optimum flavour 3weeks after fermentation (say 1 week into cold conditioning) after that they tend to diminish disappointingly....anyone else have this trouble?

    water for star-san

Cant you just use tap water with a higher concentration of SS? I have Hard water and do just, had no probs so far. If you're worried you could get some litmus papers to check it 's below pH3

    IPA disaster

Always tastes better once its carbonated and chilled

    How sanitary is bottled water?

When I prime I boil up the water and sugar to make a syrup, more concerned with boiling off any nasties that might be in the priming sugar tbh

    what is the different

I may be wrong but I've always considered porter to be be a sweeter, thicker brew whereas a stout tends to be thinner, drier and more bitter. Both can have chocolatey, coffee notes but IMO this tends to be more prominent in porters

So how much is an AG brew costing?

I need to start buying in bulk!

So how much is an AG brew costing?

Ive broke it down as much as I can foe you...obvs a big chunk of that is delivery, once I start harvesting yeast that will save £7 quid, maybe I could get cheaper grain at £5 for 5ks

So how much is an AG brew costing?

I tend to order from geterbrewed so take the £7 delivery charge on the chin. Malt tends to cost about £6-8, hops maybe 2 x £3 and then £7 yeast so you're looking at around £27 quid for 40pts which is still pretty good at 68p a pint. Obvs there's other things like fuel to consider...
