Stella SMASH Clone Water Calculation Check

If there's one thing I've learned so far in home brewing this that there's no truer statement than that!! 👍🏻 Ok, that make sense more I think about it. Will go for a decent gravity over volume this time around, better to have s small amount of something drinkable than tons of rubbish. I have...

Stella SMASH Clone Water Calculation Check

Wow!! Thank you for the great in depth reply, it's really appreciated. I'll have a look at adjusting the kettle loss and evaporation figures (I thought that 3ltr was a bit steep for such a small amount). And take it easy with the sparge, originally I was gonnan just use 12.5ltr as it was half of...

Stella SMASH Clone Water Calculation Check

Hi all. I'm looking at making a Stella clone (here's the thread with the recipe Stella SMASH Clone Recipe Check ) Think I'm happy with it but the water calculations are a bit of a mystery to me. I've used the following video to try and figure it out This is what I've got for 12.5 ltr batch...

    Stella SMASH Clone Recipe Check

Cheers for that, I was gonna use the ice water and salt method but will use my brew fridge to get down to final temp 👍🏻 That all seems pretty reasonable and doable to a certain degree with my little set up. Only snag is my fridge won't go below 4°C so might just hold it for a little bit longer...

    Stella SMASH Clone Recipe Check

I knew I was forgetting something!! I remember now the last lager I did (Cooper's Cerveza) and remember doing that before filtering into my layering vessel

    Stella SMASH Clone Recipe Check

Hi all. Back again after long break from brewing, Fancy trying my first BIAB beer and quite fancied this: I'm starting with a smaller batch due to cost and having never done a grain brew before so have halved the amounts. I'm going to try and harvest the yeast from 4 bottles of Stella...

    Apple and mango infected???

Hi all First time brewing again after a long break and decided to give an apple and mango turbo cider a go. All going fine and bottled last Sunday, checked on it today and got the fright of my life. Is this an infection? It's in every bottle some have less, some loads. Here's the recipe...

    No-chill in a pressure barrell

Thanks for that, didn't think about possible vacuum (physics not my strong point!).

    No-chill in a pressure barrell

Hi all. Hoping to finally have a go at BIAB brewing this year. Needing to do no-chill untill I can get running water to my brewshed and don't really want to buy a dedicated vessel. Got me thinking about using my Wilko pressure barrel as I can purge the O2 with CO2 keeping the beer safe while...

1st BIAB / Smash recipe. Does this look right?

Cheers for that, I really appreciate it. I've had a go at making a starter once and it seemed to have worked (still lagering the brew I used it for so hopefully it'll come right.) and am lucky enough to have a fermenting fridge with an inkbird setup and just need a chiller and a mashing bag for...

1st BIAB / Smash recipe. Does this look right?

@Fireside Ales Homebrewery @Oneflewover Cheers for the reply guys I really appreciate it My thinking was 'keep it simple stupid' for the first run, mostly cos I am a bit daft and to try and build up in my head what different ingredients taste like, so I can work off of that. I like and drink...

1st BIAB / Smash recipe. Does this look right?

Scratch that, been rereading the recipe and sure the timings are off. Think it should be first hops at 60 mins to go, 2nd hops and whilfloc at 15 mins to go, yeast nutrient at 10 mins to go then last hops at 'flame out' then yeast and dry hop. At least that's my understanding, any thoughts or...

1st BIAB / Smash recipe. Does this look right?

Hi all Looking to the future and want to give all grain / BIAB a go. Thought a smash wod be a good place to start. Found this recipe Single-Malt, Single-Hop IPA (For Beginning Homebrewers) Recipe and have plumbed it into a calculator I found on the playstore which gave me this (pdf file) or...

    Water filter micron size

Well water testing went well, getting good flow so fingers crossed putting the beer through it should be fine, wish me luck. Off to sterilise everything within an inch of its life 🤞

    Water filter micron size

@terrym Cheers for the replies, i think I've grasped it now with regards to overwhelming the filter. All I really want to do is knock back the worst of the sediment while keeping yeast so I can still prime with sugar. And I agree with you about using gravity, the video I saw it being done with...

    Water filter micron size

OK, I think I get that bit, but am I correct in saying particles smaller than 10 microns (such as some yeast cells) will still pass through the filter (which is fine) but bigger particles (unwanted sediment) won't? Or is it a case of all the smaller particles clumping together and still not...

Thanks Terry. I had done a quick search but wasn't sure so thought I'd check here as well

    Water filter micron size

Hi all I've come into a water filter housing that I'm thinking of using to filter sediment from my brews and am looking for a filter for it. A couple of videos on YouTube seem to use 20 micron filters and my understanding is any lower than one will remove yeast which I don't want to do as I'll...
