    Split between bottles and keg

D'oh - sorry. It was a long day yesterday of marshaling a three year old around the garden in the heat and completely missed the tone

    Split between bottles and keg

That's brilliant. Looks like 4.8g of sugar per half litre bottle. Calculator thinks I've got 0.86 volumes of CO2 in the brew

    Split between bottles and keg

Probably because it isn't enough CO2 to get it to bubble. The bubbling is it coming out of solution so you need some extra.

    Split between bottles and keg

That's what I'd thought, but couldn't work out how to modify the amount of priming sugar to compensate.

    Split between bottles and keg

Ah, ok. I think I'd read that some CO2 does dissolve, hence why if you increase the fermenter temperature the airlock can suddenly start bubbling again (since it comes out if solution at the higher temperature)

    Split between bottles and keg

    I think it's quite fizzy - something like 3 volumes CO2?
  7. Fritzpoll85

    Split between bottles and keg

Ah, I thought there would be some CO2 dissolved in it from the fermenter?

    Split between bottles and keg

I'm about to package my dunkles weissbier. I have a keg which is where the bulk of it will go, but some friends and family want to have a try so I also need to bottle some. I don't want to bulk prime since I'm kegging the beer. Do I just work out the bulk prime amount and then divide it...

    Fritz's Dunkelweizen

One of busted, badly calibrated, low on battery. I'll have an investigate once I've got the beer out (don't want to rummage in the beer too much!). The temperature readings are drifting a bit now, so I wonder if it's just been stored improperly and running out of puff. Searching around...

    Fritz's Dunkelweizen

That's before correction but I popped in a correction of 1.04 on the calculator as a rule of thumb (not having done the work to compute mine yet). The calculator said 1.005. Will leave it a couple of days to clean up a bit then keg/bottle. Sorry for the earlier moan - just couldn't work out...

    Fritz's Dunkelweizen

I almost immediately found this: https://www.brewersfriend.com/refractometer-calculator/ I'll pull a sample before sunset and see what it comes out with. Could just be that the tilt is horrifically off calibration Edit: OK, so interestingly the refractometer now reads 5.6% brix compared to...

    Fritz's Dunkelweizen

Hi @strange-steve. Possible the tilt is miscalibrated, I suppose Sadly my hydrometer broke a couple if months ago and I haven't replaced it. I pulled a sample and did a refractometer check (notes from yesterday are 6.6 to 6.8% brix) but don't know how to adjust the reading for the alcohol or...

    Fritz's Dunkelweizen

I pitched another pack of rehydrated yeast yesterday. I got a bit of airlock activity but it has stopped again now. Tilt reading 1.031. Really disappointed. Not sure what has gone wrong. Only thing is if there weren't enough fermentable sugars, but what did I get wrong in the mashing stage...

    Fritz's Dunkelweizen

Thinking 1 pack of M20 might not have been enough so maybe I should bung another pack in?
  15. Fritzpoll85

    Fritz's Dunkelweizen

I've got a problem. The airlock activity collapsed to nothing overnight last night. The Tilt has now been stuck at 1.032 which is well above where I'd like it. I've tried bumping the temperature up to 20 degrees C and I agitated the fermenter a bit but no change. Any advice?

    Fritz's Dunkelweizen

Update: woke up this morning and it is bubbling like a mad thing again. Hopefully will be another quick ferment. But going to leave it at 18 degrees on second thoughts.

    Fritz's Dunkelweizen

So today was brewday. Mashed according to the recipe above, except I dropped the first mash step to 20 mins. Did a 90min boil in the end. No sticking on the mash or sparge this time, so going to unscientifically attribute that to the oat husks Got around 19.5L into the fermenter...

    Panic! Grainfather sparge water heater

Good to know in case I'd left it to the last minute!

    Panic! Grainfather sparge water heater

Crisis averted. For those who need to know, you need to empty the sparge water out, turn off at the plug. Then on the underside of the unit, there is a little button to push. I must have just turned it on dry when I plugged it in

    Panic! Grainfather sparge water heater

I've just started a brew, but the water heater won't turn on - I've got about 90mins before I need the water Is there a trip reset switch on the sparge water heater? I cannot find a manual anywhere!
