    Don't trust eBay sellers.

Yes, this. When distilling pure spirit you generally want a flavourless base product to work with so active carbon is perfect but the last thing you want to do is strip the flavour from a beer you have spent time choosing the perfect blend of malts and hops.

    Hot weather and 18oC target

Another option is a peltier cooler which are notoriously rubbish in fridges but ideal in these circumstances. I had one in the shed from a road trip I did in Kenya, I bought it as it was small/lightweight for the flight and I could make an onsite coolbox from a cardboard box and power it from...

    Polypin alternative

I have ordered a couple at that price, they might be fun for short term storage to avoid too much plastic taste. I'm thinking it could be good in the garden for BBQ's etc. Draw of a few litres from the keg, attach to my bear engine and submerge the container in a rubble trug of cold water to...

    Polypin alternative

Good point, I had not thought about any kind of taste from the plastic, that can be a real problem. I have read these are very strong but the taps can be a bit leaky. I have only read where someone was using one for short term (few hours) at a party with a beer engine.

    Polypin alternative

I just came across these water carriers at an excellent price (Just £2.39 using code MIDM201 ) and wondered if they could be used as an alternative to a polypin with a beer engine? They must be food safe to carry water, I'd be interested in anyone's thoughts...

    Accidentally froze yeast

Thanks guys, that's good advice, I didn't consider using a starter with a smack pack.

    Accidentally froze yeast

I put two smack packs of Wyeast (Ringwood) in the back of the fridge a week ago, I used the first one yesterday and all was good, it activated and the FV is nice and lively today. Last night I went back to the fridge to check the maximum recommended fermenting temperature on the unopened pack...

    Hot weather and 18oC target

Put the FV in a builders rubble trug, bungee a fluffy cotton towel around the FV so it hangs down the whole outside and into the base of the trug, put a few inches of room temperature water in the trug and point a desk fan at it. This is a home made evaporation cooler, just take care not to...

    Start Water volume

About to start me first EPA brew and have a few newbie questions before starting. I am a bit confused about how much water to start with in my boiler, I am doing the 23L brew in the attached, at the bottom it says "Total Liguor 34.1L" does this mean I should start with 34.1L in my boiler before...

How to seal fermentation barrel cap hole

Thanks, that actually would have been the simplest and easiest method, a demijohn rubber cork would have been perfect. I have placed an order with Toostation now but this is a great fallback.

How to seal fermentation barrel cap hole

Thanks, yes that would be better or a plain white plastic one, thanks again.

How to seal fermentation barrel cap hole

That's an idea, the holes are about 1" for a rubber demijohn cork, you can get chrome disks to blank tap holes that might work. I have only used them to brew wash before, wash gets used right away with no need for storage. Ale is a new venture and I wanted to use the same equipment, one barrel...

How to seal fermentation barrel cap hole

Yes they are both pressure barrels. I have not been able to find new caps, both barrels (different makes) have the same 4 1/2" caps but the biggest I can find is 4".

How to seal fermentation barrel cap hole

Does anyone have any good ideas what I can use to seal the hole on the cap of one of my fermentation barrels. Both my barrels have a hole in the cap for an airlock and I want to seal the hole in one with some form of "blank" anyone seen anything or re purposed something that fits? Even better...

    Baby Burco f33l boiler Help

How does your regulator work, I have set up a 33L Burco with the same regulator as you appear to have and it gives really good control in my tests. I'm re-purposing all the components, I bought them for another purpose some years ago and was amazed to find we have identical setups. I added a...

    Handpull Engine Size

Thanks for that, I took a look at this before posting but with the big plastic ends it's very hard to know how far the cylinder penetrates and the diameter is also quite difficult to gauge with the four bolts in the way, not to mention not knowing how far back the plunger pulls. My best try on...

    Handpull Engine Size

Hi, first post. I have just bought a Handpull, it's a Holmark marked John Smiths on the brass base with a white handle. I wand to strip and refurbish it, is there any way to identify the size? I can only find a service kit for a 1/2 pint. I guess I could pull some water through and measure the...
