    The price of yeast.

I reckon if you used it for long enough, and kept several samples in the fridge after each brew, just in case it devloped a mutation you didn't like, you could selectively mutate a house yeast for yourself. Initially, it would probably resemble a weak farmhouse ale but I think you could...

Fixing a buffalo boiler cut out

The way the PID works is by switching the output(SSR, which essentially just a switch) on and off a calculated number of times in order to reach and maintain your setpoint without overshooting. Older devices used to need manual tuning so that the system was stable, but most PID devices now...

Home Brew Competition - March 17

If memory serves me right, I don't think this category includes Abbey Ales.

Home Brew Competition - March 17

Here it is. Clarity isn't there yet(plus I was rough pouring it), but this one has had a week in the fridge and it tastes fantastic. It's a Belgian all right, classic Belgian fruity nose maybe a little more reserved than some. A nice balanced bitterness and subtle earthy hop taste and just the...

Fixing a buffalo boiler cut out

Remember that your PID probably needs a Solid sate relay. I doubt that it has the capacity to switch a heating element directly. In answer to your question yes, that is a perfectly viable way of wiring it. So the mains feed is being switched by both the SSR/PID and the existing stat in series...

Fixing a buffalo boiler cut out

I swapped out the thermostat in my Cygnet 27L for a simmerstat and bypassed the thermal cutouts. Which eliminates the temperature of the liquid being an issue. The simmer stat works more like a digital device in that it turns the power on and off at certain rate. That switching rate will achieve...

    the best you made

Kit - Geordie Scottish Export pitched on a Saflager-S23 Yeast cake then lagered for a year. It got a little light exposure at the end of fermentation which gave it a little skunkyess but it just added to the character, Amazing! All Grain - PP Kalifornien, my California Common aka steam beer...

Home Brew Competition - March 17

All right, Lick Your Wrist is all bottled up and carbed. So it's got just over a month to condition before the comp. Excellent! Early tastings are promising. Once again I look forward to peer feedback :)

    Must try harder!!

Haha I didn't mean to terrify. I think the chaotic questioning style makes it a little more daunting than I originally intended. I'll edit it so that it reads more clearly and less chaotically.

    Wanted - Brew Kettle 30L - 50L

I'm looking to complete my system with a brew kettle. So far I've been doubling up and using my HLT as a kettle too. I'm after a burco style boiler or a buffalo, even a home made stock pot boiler will be fine as long as the build quality is reasonable. All I require is that it is made from...

    Homebrew Twang??

Homebrew "twang" is usually caused by a combination of several issues, often associated with the novice brewer, and is hard to pin down. It is often wrongly attributed to the use of can kits and ingredients like sugar. I think the association comes from the fact that this is where people start...

I feel for you. I try to sell it to her this way; If I have a room for it then I don't have to clutter up the house with it. Otherwise there are going to be brew fridges, pots and tables taking up space in the house

    New brewer

If you're dry hopping, then in all likelihood your primary fermentation is finished(or it should be). A temperature difference of 2°C will not make any drastic change to beer flavours once primary fermentation is complete. It may affect hop oil extraction, but I would imagine that the...

When your girlfriend asks rhetorically " You're reading about brewing aren't you?". Oh and when you're looking at buying a house and one of the criteria is that it has a shed large enough for brewing

    Must try harder!!

Don't be scared to share your brews, it's good to get constructive feedback. Someone might be able to pinpoint a flavour that will make you think " bingo , I know what caused that". I tend to make new recipes too, but you can still apply what you've learned. Points to consider when making a...
