    Hydrometers

These are my hydrometers. The Mickey Mouse one designed for homebrewers has a range from 9 to 110 along a 75mm stem, and the three professional ones cover the ranges shown along 120mm stems. The bulb and stem diameters of the little one are 180mm and 66mm, and of the others 400mm and an...

Taking a sample/reading - throw out the sample?

I've always tipped the sample back into the FV, and never had a problem.

I've just found out I've been calculating ABV wrong all these years!

When I were a lad Brewers kept the strength of their beers a secret, and the existence of the OG only came to peoples notice thanks to Camra.

    I'll try again.

Welcome fellow Tavi brewer. The river Tavy flows past our place, and on the odd occasion has invaded my Garage/Brewery to a depth of about a foot – which makes life interesting. I am a beer only fanatic, so can offer no help with mead. I did once almost go into partnership with a likeable rogue...

Worthwhile visit to my local brewery this afternoon

It pays to make friends with your local brewer, and to this end an expensive bottle of whisky at Christmas is money well spent. Also if you are scrounging yeast, drop a suitable container in a week or so before you need it, so they can fill it when it suits them, not while you wait.

    White Labs Yeast

Thanks for all the comments. I have decided to stick with whatever yeast the brewery gives me, and not look a gift horse in the mouth!

    White Labs Yeast

Yes, I really mean gallons, in which I usually pitch just under a pound (weight) of yeast slurry skimmed off the top of a local brewery’s FV. I get this for nothing, so for me to change over to Wyeast just doesn’t make sense. As I mentioned, the Brewery is currently using a yeast that sinks to...

    White Labs Yeast

So how many slap packs would I need to ferment a 35 gallon batch of wort, and would I need to make up a starter? If so, remind me how to do it - it must be over 50 years ago when I last did that!

    White Labs Yeast

Thanks for the information. I’m really just exploring available top cropping liquid yeast varieties, and 037 caught my eye as one used in open FVs. The local mini-brewery who usually supplies my yeast for free, has been trying various dried yeasts which, although supposedly top fermenting...

    White Labs Yeast

Can anybody tell me who supplies White Labs range of yeasts in the UK? I am particularly interested in their 037 Yorkshire Square yeast, has anyone tried it?

Emulating cask ale - what's the average shelf life?

Is that little picture on the left a clue?

Emulating cask ale - what's the average shelf life?

I would agree with you duckie, which is why I connect a foil balloon, which has carbon dioxide inside it and Noddy on the outside, to the cap. This has the same effect as using a cask breather with the added advantage that you can serve the beer by gravity if you want to.

Emulating cask ale - what's the average shelf life?

I don't use a cask breather (any more), and I must be very lucky!

Emulating cask ale - what's the average shelf life?

I regularly work my way through four PBs of ale from the same brew, and by the time the last one is coming to an end it is some 70 to 80 days after they were filled. I keep the beer at around 12 C and ensure no air comes into contact with it until the moment it lands in my glass and have never...

    Go-to Yeasts

Thanks Hoppyland. It’s a top cropper I’m interested in, as although I ferment in a cylindriconical, experience shows I loose far less beer skimming most of the yeast from the top than from the bottom.

I give mine an overnight soak of diluted Antiformin followed by a good rinse, and can't understand why its not more popular.
