Choosing - Brewzilla 35l vs Brauheld Pro 45l vs Brauheld Smart 45l

I had some doubts about this when I bought my heat exchanger disk. In fact it works without any problems and I do not use the pump during the heat to boil phase.

The all rounders are no more

In my opinion no chlorine based product should ever be allowed near brewing gear. There are plenty of good cleaners that do not use it, but the polyphenol risk with anything chlorine based is just too great.

    That homebrew taste after barreling

I have used spray dried malt occasionally and that was fine - it is the liquid stuff that seems to have the twang. Most liquid extracts seem to be made by Muntons these days: very many years ago I used DMS extract made by Edme and I don't remember that being too bad. I don't know when Edme...

    DHL

We bought an air conditioner in the summer last year. Tracking showed that it had reached APC's facility in Hereford and that was the last that was seen of it.

    That homebrew taste after barreling

It comes from the fact that kits use malt extract. I have never tasted a kit beer that doesn't have it. I think it is particularly noticeable if you normally brew AG.

The all rounders are no more

Utter nonsense. Have you tried cleaning one, or is this just hearsay and fake news?

Brewzilla Gen 4 advice and experiences

Don't keep the pump completely closed, as you need some re-circulation. Just keep it turned very low to start with until you are sure that the wort is percolating through the mash satisfactorily..

Brewzilla Gen 4 advice and experiences

Use some rice hulls or oat husks in your mash and keep the pump throttled well back in the early stages of the mash. Stir your mash after about ten minutes and, if you turn the pump flow tap up later in the mash, keep a close eye on the level in the malt basket. I rarely turn my pump tap up more...

Loose Grainfather G40 hop filter plate?

There are two major flaws in the design of the G40. First the malt basket lets too much fine material through (I had a G40 and now have a BZ Gen4 so I can make direct comparisons). Secondly the design of the bottom plate lets material through round the edges, and, worse, the inner part catches...

    Sparge water heater recommendation

The Brew Monk sparge water heater from GEB is good and big enough for most uses (22 litres).

    DHL

I fully agree with those who have said that a postcode lottery affects the quality of delivery companies, but the fact is that DHL is lousy here in Gloucestershire and in Kent which was the subject of my OP.

Brewzilla Gen 4 advice and experiences

I get almost no hop trub as the bottom screen fits tightly (too tightly to begin with - BKT had to get me a replacement which fits perfectly).

    DHL

I ordered a case of German beers from Beers of Europe for my daughter's partner's birthday. I had an email from DHL saying it would be delivered between 1335 and 1435 on Monday. Although the recipient works from home a lot, he had to be in London on Monday but said not to worry as delivery...

Brewzilla Gen 4 advice and experiences

Recirculation using just the supplied hose is very inefficient as you really have no way of ensuring that the wort percolates through every part of the grain bed. I use a home made manifold (based on the SS Brewtech design) and I am sure this improves efficiency.

Brewzilla Gen 4 advice and experiences

I get more consistent temperatures the way I do it. I found that using the BT thermometer to control the mash led to temperature overshoots. Try both ways and see which works best for you.

Brewzilla Gen 4 advice and experiences

There are plenty of armchair critics of the Gen 4 around - most of them have never used one. I have been using one for almost a year and have produced around 25 brews on it. I do not now use the PID option which I found led to temperature overshoots. I use the built in temperature sensor, with...
