    Hosepipe ban.

I brew in my garden shed and am thinking about running the flow from the chiller to my water butt. I am not sure if this is allowed and will check but I cannot see why it would not be since the water will then be used to water the garden with a watering can.

    Harveys of Lewes best bitter

Not sure, but I suspect that it is the original. They are very protective of their yeast and I doubt they would want another yeast floating around in what is a very traditional brewery with open fermenters

    Harveys of Lewes best bitter

Oh yes, I forgot about this one. I might gave to have it a go!

    Harveys of Lewes best bitter

I don't think any of their bottles are bottle conditioned. Not sure how the Ringwood yeast would turn out. Probably worth a try. The Harvey's yeast originated from John Smiths in Tadcaster in the 1950's but has been repitched so many times it will have changed significantly.

    Harveys of Lewes best bitter

I am local to Harvey's and the yeast is key. A long time ago I brewed a recipe for a best bitter (not Harveys) that I had done a lot and knew well but this time went down to the brewery and got some of their yeast. The resulting beer was very like Harveys just from the yeast. They do not...

The 'Recommend me a TV series' thread

Watching Series 2 of The Outlaws at the moment. I enjoyed Series 1 and thought Series 2 might not be up to the same standard but it is just as good. Some really good writing from Stephen Merchant with some interesting characters including one played by Christopher Walken. Nice to find a...

    IBU's

Out of interest I checked the thread where someone had put my Amarillo smash recipe into Brewfather and it came out at 122 IBU. I then put the same recipe into the SMPH calculator and it came out at 66. It certainly tasted much more like a 66 than a 122! I know it doesn't really matter...

    IBU's

This is very interesting. A while ago I posted a recipe for an Amarillo smash that I had made that had turned out very nicely. Someone pointed our that it had a predicted IBU of about 120 (in either Brewfather or Brewsmith, I can't remember which) and so was far too heavily hopped. It was hop...

    Bottle conditioning sediment

I mainly use Nottingham yeast and fine with gelatine. I bottle condition for 2 - 3 weeks and give all the bottles a little rattle against each other after about a week (this dislodges any yeast that has stuck to the sides of the bottle and allows in to settle to the bottom). I pour carefully...

Brewing mistakes you really wish you'd avoided...

I regard this as an integral part of the brewing process!

    Black ipa with English hops

That looks a decent recipe, not a million miles away from one I did recently based on the Guinness West Indies porter. What is the book please?

    25kg sack price?

I guess most local breweries buy uncrushed malt and crush it themselves. Are most happy to sell it crushed?

    Chinook IPA....first taste

I did an Amarillo smash a couple of months ago and it came out really well. I am going to repeat it when I do my next brewing order.

    What did you brew today?

First try at a Fullers Bengal Lancer clone. Pale malt and a little crystal hopped with fuggles and goldings. Will be dry hopped with both later. Original gravity came in slightly below but volume slightly above.

    Priming Question

I guess it depends on wehat yeast you are using. I mainly use Nottingham which floculates very well and so it keeps together as a tight pack when the beer is opened and poured. It also depends on the bottle. I used to have that problem with Nottingham when I used old plastic sparkling water...

    Priming Question

Just to add another complexity...... do you fine your bottles and if do how does this affect your calculations? I make up a gelatine solution and dissolve my sugar into that to give a fining and priming solution which I then add to each bottle with a syringe. A bit of practice means I now know...

What are you drinking tonight 2022?

Guinness West Indies porter clone. First attempt and while not spot on it is dangerously drinkable. Can't wait to play with the recipe a bit.

Can anyone recommend me a stout/porter recipe

I used Weyermans acidulated malt from Malt Miller.

Can anyone recommend me a stout/porter recipe

I have recently tried the Guinness West Indies porter recipe on the wildabouthops.nz website. It is not quite the same as the Guinness version (a bit drier mainly, a bit more like the Fullers London porter) but is rather good.

    Beer bottling

I am sure bench cappers are very good but I have always used a twin capper. I have used it on countless brews over about 20 years and have never had a problem. However, I have been thinking of getting a back up since it is pretty old now so maybe I should look at a bench capper. My bottles...
