    Pellet hops and vegetable bags

I am surprised that lots of people have problems with freely circulating hops. It has never been an issue for me. My hops just get chucked in (whole hops). The boiler has a perforated false bottom and I leave it all to settle for 30 -40 mins at the end of the boil. It is then run off into...

    DHL

I have just had a nightmare with a DHL delivery from Malt Miller. A one hour time slot on Wed, then Thurs, then Fri. No delivery over the weekend so finally got my order 5 days late on Mon. I was in contact with TMM who were very good at keeping track of the situation and afterwards gave me a...

    Malt Miller delivery problems

I have spoken to Malt Miller and they have been fine but while DHL keeps saying get are delivering it that day there is not much they can do.

    Malt Miller delivery problems

I have used Malt Miller for the last few years and have always been impressed by their service and deliveries always were on time. I ordered from them again at the beginning of the week and paid a bit extra for DHL delivery since I had heard of problems with Evri. I am still awaiting my order...

    Why do you brew?

I brew because I get satisfaction from it in all sorts of ways. As a biochemist I still wonder at the scientific magic of fermentation (I was teaching fermentation to 1st year students this morning). I like producing beers which suit my palate and mostly I beleive are better than what is...

Picture or Video of the day.

    Yes, 84p is £5.41.

Picture or Video of the day.

I just checked on the Bank Of England website what 84p in 1976 would be today if you take into account inflation. Apparently we should be paying £5.41 for fish and chips now.

    Campden tablets Vs Sodium metabisulphite

Many thanks for all your replies. I think I will use a smidge, that being the official unit of metabisulphite measurement!

    Campden tablets Vs Sodium metabisulphite

Thanks. One teaspoon in how much water?

    Campden tablets Vs Sodium metabisulphite

Yes, but I do not have a water analysis. I think all tap water in the UK is chlorinated.

    Campden tablets Vs Sodium metabisulphite

Having used a tub of Campden tablets to dechlorinate water for a long time, I have finally got to buy more but can only get powdered sodium metabisulphite from Malt Miller. Can anyone let me know how much powder to use for 35 litres of strike/sparge water please? Thank you.

    The Homemade Pizza Thread

I will shortly be able to join this thread. I entered a competition with a pack of cans of Proper Job just because I thought "Why not?". Very unusually I won! A couple of days ago a nice shiny Ooni 12 oven arrived. Not tried it out yet but can't wait.

    Yeast for a Proper Job.

I quite regularly brew a Proper Job clone and use Notty. The result is pretty close to the real bottled version. I would recommend Notty for it.

    Guinness West Indies Porter Clone

I have been trying to create a good clone of WIP by adapting a recipe found on the Internet. I have tried about four versions so far none of which are very good clones (I cannot get that nice caramel flavour). All the brews I have done are nice enough beers but not very good clones for WIP. I...

    Plate chiller?

I am very happy with my plate chiller. It cools a 22 litre batch down to pitching temp in about 10 minutes. I often have a hop addition at flame out but have a false bottom in my kettle so never have problems with blocking. I make sure I flush it through with plenty of hot water as soon as I...

    Confused newbie

Yes 500ml. So it works out at about 2g sugar per bottle.

    Confused newbie

I transfer the beer to an upended polypin with an airlock after a few days of fermentation and let it finish off fermenting in that so most trub has been removed. I can then bottle directly from that. I find the easiest way is to make up a solution of finings and sugar (for a 20 litre brew...

    Priming bottles with a syringe

I both prime and fine my bottles with a syringe and it works very well. For a 40 bottle batch I sterilise a jug and dissolve 6g of gelatine in boiling water and then dissolve 80g of caster sugar in the resulting solution. I then make up the volume to 200ml with boiling water and use a 20ml...
