Quickie: do I really need two packets of WLP001?

Must be nice having enough experience to draw upon that you can confidently contradict not only a popular recipe builder but also the yeast manufacturer. I'm still starting out and rely on a combination of Brewfather, White Lab's instructions, and help via this forum. Because I don't know any...

Quickie: do I really need two packets of WLP001?

Hehe, glad you asked. I had some "issues" with my power supply during the last brew, and yesterday I did a 60 minute boil-off test at 100% power (3kW I believe) in order to a) see if the replacement extension leads will melt b) figure out how much my actual losses are. Good news all round...

Quickie: do I really need two packets of WLP001?

Just finished brew day, and I went with the White Labs yeast in the end. The day - my second AG - went really well actually, no unforeseen hiccups or balls dropped, at least that I know about. Once boil was underway and I chilled the pre-boil sample enough to drop my hydrometer in I was...

Quickie: do I really need two packets of WLP001?

Hey, I'm quite partial to a pint of pesh now and then! Seriously though, I've probably got around 300 bottles in the garage, all above 5%. My next brew is going to be 8%. I just want something tasty that I can drink by the bucketload without getting all inappropriate. Is that so I can re-use...

Quickie: do I really need two packets of WLP001?

Hey guys, thanks for the help with this. I've still pretty green and don't appreciate the difference that a yeast can make, I just saw the price tag on WLP001 and thought 'Hey, this must be something special ...' If US-05 is of comparable use when brewing this Session IPA should I hang on to...

Quickie: do I really need two packets of WLP001?

I'm planning a session IPA based on a recipe in Brewfather for something called Twisty Listy. Among other ingredients the recipe calls for one packet of expensive liquid yeast from White Labs, WLP001. It's a 23 litre Grainfather batch recipe and uses a lot of generic malts which I don't have...

Cold Crash in addition to Finings? Anybody?

I'm using something similar during cold-crashing, sampling (via bottom spigot) and bottling, but with a slight adaptation to allow 'topping up' from cylinder if the CO2 gets low: A few more details here: Trial runs with Bag-Thing™️ | Pain & Patience

    Brew schedule or not?

Yeah, all right, all right. Blonde moment. 🤦🏻‍♂️ Can we pretend I originally took it as a reference to the Native American Chinook people of Washington state?

Cold Crash in addition to Finings? Anybody?

That’s fair. I must admit that cold crashing as a concept has a certain whiff about it, a bit like the concept of always racking for secondary, and that some people run with it like a village ***** runs with a balloon on a stick. Speaking purely from personal running-with-sticks experience here...

Cold Crash in addition to Finings? Anybody?

Cheers Mark - Protafloc, cold-crash, and gelatine? Must be pretty clear by then! 😁 Interesting that you transfer to FV from above the trub. I don't have that option sadly but I do tend to whirlpool everything into a pile in the centre of the kettle (never managed a 'cone') so at least that...

Cold Crash in addition to Finings? Anybody?

Cheers @Galena - I ready that particular exBeeriment previously and for me this is where it fell over: I do accept that it may not make much difference to body and taste, but I do like a clear beer and stand by my original (if somewhat shortsighted) ethos that if you're gonna chill the beer...

Cold Crash in addition to Finings? Anybody?

I'm a bit new to the world of cold-crashing at the end of primary since I've only recently acquired a fridge big enough, and I was very pleased with the results when I tried it for the first time. I'm also new to finings, and was equally pleased when a ⅓ Protafloc tablet cleared up another beer...

Had to Google that and found ... Magical Helicopter Tears. https://www.eebriatrade.com/products/beer/steam-machine-brewing-co/15925-magical-helicopter-tears

    Cloudy beer

How was it primed? If sugar or carbonation drops were added near the end then I'd give it another week in the warm like @Tommo 2 suggests - I like to aim for 25 degrees over two weeks here but realistically it hovers between 20 and 25. After that definitely move it somewhere cold, but for how...

    Brew schedule or not?

Mixture of planning and whimming (that's a word now) for me. I'm fairly new to AG and kegging but going forward I like to have a selection on tap, which means one golden ale or a session IPA, one porter or stout, and something a bit funky like a wheat or a dubbel. At least that's been the...

Dry hopping under pressure help please

I've occasionally wondered about doing that. If I ever manage to get a second Fermzilla (they're sold out everywhere) then this would make for a good A/B test. Then again, one day I hope to own a stainless unitank and I've been half-kidding myself that the Fermzilla is but a stepping stone on...

    Mini Kegs

Crikey! Suddenly I feel more normal. 😁 I'll pick your brains about that yeast fridge in another thread if I may. Never really seen the point in harvesting the stuff when I can just buy a new packet for a couple of quid, but I've just spent £15 on WLP001 for a single 23 litre batch so I'm coming...

    Mini Kegs

Sounds like a foot in the door to me! 😉 Just be warned that you might end up getting another fridge along with those Cornelius kegs, cos there's no way those are fitting into your kitchen fridge without leaving marks in the butter. In my naivety I thought I could use a brew fridge for...

    Mini Kegs

That’s a fair point, I’d forgotten you were using small CO2 cartridges - apologies. If you’re keeping an eye on price and can’t get hold of a large CO2 cylinder then priming sugar is probably the way forward. I’d still encourage you to look into other sources of gas, because 16g CO2 cartridges...

Why add priming sugar when you have a keg + regulator?
