How to build (step up) a starter

Ok maybe I am missing something really obvious here... But let's say you have the dregs of a bottle conditioned beer you want to harvest the yeast. What's the difference between putting that 10ml of dregs in to Scenario a) 1 - 100ml at 1.030 2 - pour the resultant yeast in to 1l at 1.030 3 -...

    Food Hacks / Pimps

You literally just stole what I was thinking the whole time I read page 1. Add butter. Food hacked Almost all food tastes better with a big blob of lighty salted butter in the mix

    Yeast on sides of bottles

Yeah I get the same - I just ignore it The bottles are clean, bottle brushed and sanitary and I don't suffer from bottle bombs or yucky beer, so I just put it down to the yeast having a mind of it's own and ignore it

    Using Lactose for Sweetening

Why not drop a note to the institute of food science and technology (ifst) They will give you chapter and verse on any enzyme and it's reactions, compositions and usage in food preparation and consumption

Young drivers face £3,000 cost for car insurance

I think you are being a bit inaccurate about that. It's more the plethora of high tech we are having attached to the vulnerable front and rears of most cars that's the problem. How many +50k cars do you see on the roads nowadays? Well the answer is A LOT. The prevalence of company car schemes...

    What was your first car?

Not mine obvs, but here's my daughter's first car. It arrived as if by magic last week as a mega 17th birthday surprise to girl-childs absolute shock and delight! My first car was a puke yellow ford escort 1.3 GL MK3 from 1983. What an utter shed and the engine seized after 3 months.

What are you drinking tonight 2024.

A glass of finest Scottish alcohol. Interesting story behind this bottle, it was given to a retiring RAF pilot by his squadron mates, but He didn't have the heart to tell them he doesn't like whisky. So it's sat in his drinks cabinet for the last 21 years unopened and still in the tube! Cue his...

    Nicks90's Brewdays

AG146 Belgian Black I cheated a bit with this, by putting it through my fizzics beer engine to get a head from the very initial meagre carb... But it's already lovely! Black and toasty, dry as hell with a strong aftertaste of sweet berry. If I didn't know it was elderberry I wouldn't know, it...

Things you dont see in the press.

Yup, unless a story can get people to spew bile and hatred or be outraged, then it doesn't sell as far as they are concerned Sad state of affairs.

    Nicks90's Brewdays

If I put my mind to it, I can clean, sanitise and bottle a 15l batch - and cap them - in about an hour. But with the usual distractions at a weekend that usually ends up as 2 hours

    Nicks90's Brewdays

@Twostage all my bottles are clean, as I give them a thorough rinse after I've poured them All I need to do on bottling day is give them a dunk in soapy water and a quick whizz with my bottle brush before moving straight on to sanitising

To squeeze or not to squeeze

No I'm squeezing a bit of juice in to a large quantity of wine or a jug. I'm not whisking it with an electric whizz bang whisk The amount of O2 it will pick up will be absolutely negligible

To squeeze or not to squeeze

I always squeeze It's my juice and I want ALL OF IT! I tend to use those cheap veg bags or one of my wife's old bra washing linen bags for my fruit. When it's time to transfer I rinse a colander in some boiling water, lift the bag out and rest the colander over the top of my FV and drop the...

    Nicks90's Brewdays

I have a holiday coming up for a couple of weeks, so have decided to make a concerted effort to get a few brews in beforehand and get them bottled up to carb whilst I am away - giving me a nice post holiday stockpile to maintain onwards. AG148 Summit IPA 4kg Maris Otter 150g crystal 113ebc...

    Nicks90's Brewdays

AG147 Old school Ale Havent done a straight up English ale for what seems like ages - and as my latest HBS order has just been delivered - time to put on a good old fashioned beer in the most classic of styles 3.5kg Maris Otter 150g crystal 113ebc 30g roasted barley 18l mash at 66c for 60mins...

    Nicks90's Brewdays

racked this in to a clean fermenting bucket today and took a reading, 1.008 so it would appear to be finished, but i think having it off the fruit and lees for another week to finish off and clean up after itself wont do it any harm. Might even put it in the cellar for the last few days to...

    Nicks90's Brewdays

First proper taste test. It's ooo-k I would never brew it again, but it's ok. My Yorkshire-ness would mean I would drink it anyway, but it has a good malty backbone, fruity eaters from the yeast, but the hops jar with it. Bit of a downer really, what I would consider sub standard. But it was a...

    Holidays

But that link has been proved over and over again https://explore-education-statistics.service.gov.uk/find-statistics/the-link-between-absence-and-attainment-at-ks2-and-ks4 So a 5% absence differential leads to a 50% attainment differential There are 180 teaching days a year, so that 9 days...
